Too HOT!

My system

  • asus z390 pro
  • i5 9600k
  • msi duke 1070 ti
  • coolermaster masterliquid lc240e rgb

I had issues with the computer shutting down, repeatedly.

I’ve replaced

  • the power supply with a new corsair tm650x
  • the lc240e with a new lc240e

Tom’s hardware tells me that my cpu shouldn’t get above (or near) 100c.

OpenHardwareMonitor tells me that i’ve got cores at 100C hitting 110C at times. It also tells me that the max has been 115C.


The in/out pipes to the AIO are very warm to the touch. To me, this suggests that I’ve pasted properly otherwise it wouldn’t be getting the heat.

In my bios, I’ve set the case fans to max.

Just for added support, I had MSI afterburner set it’s fan to max.

  • What am I doing wrong?
  • What do I need to do to fix?

After looking through my previous posts, I managed to locate my first request-for-overheating-help page. Machine turns itself off intermittently
I probably should have updated that post instead as I think the shutdowns were overheat related.
Advice given included

  • run memtest which I did but which didn’t yield issues
  • replace the power supply which I did, upping from 550 to 650
  • refeed/reseat all cables which I did when replacing the psu

Since my original post, about 15 min ago, the temps have increased but the in/out tubes are cooler…

Case panel was removed per someone’s suggestion. Got shutdown while watching YouTube for about 10 minutes. Went to bios and was told CPU was at 107C.


Cooler attached to cpu was warm. Tubes barely warm.

At boot.

A few minutes later.

Is the problem with my CPU or my MB?

I’d expect to see temps like that with no cooler on the CPU at all. Sounds like something is very wrong with your cooler installation or possibly the CPU heatspreader, though I’ve never heard of anything like that unless the CPU has been delidded.

Can you get some pictures of the cooler mounting? Have you reapplied thermal paste?

Thank you for your response. No I haven’t reapplied the thermal paste. My previous attempts with this resulted in excess that had to be removed from the adjacent cracks and crevasses when I replaced with the new AIO. Also, I’ve never delidded. Here are pics of the cooler mounted on the cpu and the connected fan/grill structure.



. yes, the plastic sticker/sheet from the bottom of the heatsink was removed.
. regarding airflow in the upper left corner where the 2 fans meet…I stuck my fingers in all areas, about 1cm from components and didn’t feel any heat of substance except when my hand was directly above the GPU.
. regarding the direction of those two fans, which i think may have come pre-installed on the case…they are rather anemic and seem to be sucking air out of the case rather than blowing it in. in either case, they both seem to be substantially weaker than the fans on the AIO.
. there is a heat sink shroud covering something between the cpu and the case back.
. I tried to play Path of Exile last night and b4 I’d made it to Lion’s Eye Watch, the computer shut down. Once more an hour or so later w/nothing taxing.
. as to overclocking, i was always to much of a coward to do so when I could barely afford the computer to begin with. So, nothing to memory, clocks, cpu, etc.

I seem to continue to have issues where it decides to insta-turn itself off without any shutdown procedure, though only twice so far.

I don’t know whether the issue is my CPU, MB, Cooler, fans, etc.

What is the least cost means to salvage my investment and regain a functioning game computer?

Is there any play in the cooler mount if you wiggle it? It should be quite tight.
Can you hear the pump running when the system is on? Any idea if water is actually flowing through the loop?

If you’ve replaced the AIO and get the same behavior then it shouldn’t be an issue with the unit specifically. In that case it really sounds like a mounting problem or a serious CPU defect. I suppose it’s possible that the board is pumping way too much voltage into the CPU, but that seems unlikely. Try checking the BIOS and disable Multi-Core Enhancement if it’s on.

The CPU mount is rock solid. There’s currently too much fan noise to hear water flow. I’ll check the BIOS re: Multi-Core Enhancement.

Flip the orientation of your radiator. If the pipes are at the top then the small amount of air in the system is constantly being pulled into the pump. You may even have an airlock where fluid isnt even flowing at all.

I strongly second what @Kocytean says. It is often recommended to keep the hoses at a low point of the radiator, so that air that inevitably seeps into the system does not interfere with pump operation. Wendell has mentioned this himself on occasion.

If that doesn’t fix it, the pump may have failed due to running dry.

Another thing to check with mounting is clearance… those caps at the top look awfully close to the bracket… as does the other component on the far side… when you took off the cooler the paste had a good spread? Just checking boxes…

I know this probably won’t help but the fans seem to be pushing air out the front?.. I could be seeing that wrong…

I see the fans working, but is the pump connected to a header you can monitor?.. see what the pump speed is?

After an hour of struggle – the in/out hoses are about 1" shy, and the MSI Duke is obscenely long – I managed to flip the radiator and reassemble.

W/nothing else but chrome, for the sake of L1 Forums running, moments after boot, my temp profile looks like this:


in which, temp 4 seems high, but the others, not so much.

I’m choosing to hope that this fixes things. Another hour or two will remove all doubt.

Probably best thing to do right now is closely monitoring the temps.
If you still have issues with such high temps,
then i´m affraid there might be something wrong with your cooler.
And then the first thing i would suspect is the pump itself or installation paste job.

That’s the understatement of the decade.

All other cores are within the normal range for idle temps on an aio.

I have no idea what would cause that temp spike on core 4.

Temp 4 is another sensor. That’s mobo readings. :slight_smile:

… I’d bet temp 4 is the sensor for the VRM for the cpu.

You’ve got a power MOSFET barbecuing itself and the CPU being downstream from it the core temps are a symptom.

I think your motherboard is a warm day away from shitting the bed. Probably not a pop, but a whimper and some blue smoke

Yes, I used the paste provided with the AIO. I just installed it about 24 hours ago, but when I flipped the radiator, I had to remove and try the part attached to the CPU a few times. The paste had spread but missed a couple corners. I cleaned it off and reapplied, slightly more generously. But, yes, there is thermal paste.

I’m uncertain of the meaning of all you’ve said, but it sounds somewhat scary. Are you saying the problem is the MB or the CPU? Is there a way to verify this?

I think the cooler is OK, it is brand new. Apparently I installed the radiator upside down and had to stretch/contort stuff to get the proper orientation and GPU to fit. When I removed the cpu cooler I got a chance to see the paste which seemed to cover the lid but didn’t get perfect coverage on 2 corners. This was cleaned off and re-applied, slightly more generously.

One thing I have not seen mentioned here, is that case airflow also matters - it could be that your front intake vents are simply too small to provide enough airflow to the AIO. If in doubt, remove the front cover and see if this makes a difference.

But yeah, also VRM temps are worrying, it could be this specific motherboard is not built for overclocking and this is why you are seeing these temps.
