The 4x AMD Radeon AI Pro R9700 128gb Giveaway

This is a companion topic to the video and AMD R9700 Giveaway.

We built this MONSTER. It has 4 gpus. It needs a special case. And yet, it uses less power than a comparable system with 2x RTX 5090s (just barely).

… and I’m giving away two of these R9700s!

How do I enter to get one of the two XFX 9700 GPUs?

Make a thread here in our community blog forum about your project, and talk about/show off what you’ve done, and what you want to do with the R9700.

Do you have in mind a school project home lab project, what? And tell us a sentence or two about what the R9700 would let you do you can’t do now.

Ideally your project is either about AI or something that can use the compute/memory capabilities of a GPU like the R9700. Photogrammetry, CFD, or anything like that also applies. Any creative or studio uses, too!

Talk about your project and what you are working on, have worked on, or want to work on! Do you have your own blog or video or github or something where your project is discussed? Cool! Link it on your community blog post and discuss there.

Then once you’ve made that thread, come back here and reply with a link to your thread.

The only replies on this thread will be links to projects in the blog area – we’re using this thread to keep everything organized. Feel free to use tags to tag your project appropriately. Who knows?! maybe years from now someone will see your project and be inspired! Upload pics, discuss, do whatever you’d like to do.

When does this end?

Around Saturday January 10, 2 pm Eastern Daylight Time.

And, ultimately, Wendell is going to manually or quasi-manually pick the two winners. However you can flag your interest in someone’s project by adding a like (heart) to their reply on this thread. Who knows, he may end up giving away more stuff we’ve got laying around the office.

One goal we have for this contest is to also let our community show off how talented they are and what sort of fun projects they’ve been up to.

It would also motivate me to post more to here:

because I would feel guilty getting the free gpus, and not showing what I do with it

If I don’t win, @ubergarm would be a good nominee.

It would be cool to see a guide for getting started with fine tuning models at home with consumer gpus

For my use case, we do work with a non-for-profit for Autism residential care, and many of their residents are whip smart about using LLM for graphics work, though they may struggle with other social skills. I would be looking at a way to deploy this in a Threadripper build that could allow them to work remotely and even do gamestreaming (several Minecrafters as well).

Full disclosure: my son is in residential care and has been a big LLM user, and would make heavy use of anything that can help him generate graphics.

I have a machine with a RTX 5090 but I am limited in model sizes I can run. Doing research for personal projects and work where everything is AI… AI… AI and they need help in how to do it and the limitations of what can be done and how in a commercial environment. Need more memory to run decent sized models for analytical data analysis tasks and let me son have a newer machine

I don’t have a sob story or noble pursuit here… I work as a data center engineer and am around massive GPU farms regularly. This stuff is just cool to me.

This would just be nice to have and idk if that disqualifies me but I’d use them for some cool & share the resources with my friend group.

I would trade them in for a RTX PRO 6000 haha sorry AMD.

I would use one of the 9700s to do local AI on my photos. I am a part-time photographer, and sorting all of my photos would be able to set myself apart. Love your content, Keep it Going!

Hi Wendell,
I have written a brief community post on how I could use an R9700 for CFD software development and driver/compiler testing: “Using R9700 for my CFD project”
Posting links in the here or in the community post does not work unfortunately, but you can just search the post with title over at the forum, and search the project on GitHub.
Kind regards,
Moritz

Project Title:
Autonomous Data Generation and Repair-Driven Training for Specialized Code Models

Project Description:
I’m building a fully local system for training specialized code language models where correctness is defined by external verification rather than subjective evaluation.

The project is deliberately focused on data quality and verification, not model size or hype.

Over the past 3–4 months, I’ve designed and implemented an end-to-end pipeline that generates candidate code samples, verifies them using a real toolchain (compiler or validator), captures structured failure feedback, produces repair pairs (invalid to corrected code), and stores all artifacts in a clean, reproducible JSONL dataset.

At this stage, the dataset already contains approximately 1,500 verified data pairs and is structured to scale autonomously once quality thresholds are met.

The emphasis is on repair learning, not just successful outputs. This approach trains models to understand and correct their own mistakes using real feedback signals.

All components run on-prem, without cloud dependencies, and are engineered for deterministic behavior and repeatability.

The next phase is deploying a data-production agent that can continuously generate, validate, repair, and curate data once quality thresholds are met.

Why professional AI hardware matters:
AI-class GPUs enable parallel verification workers, faster iteration on repair-heavy loops, and stable fine-tuning, while keeping the system fully local and vendor-independent.

Background:
This project is the result of an intense, focused build period rather than a long-running research effort. The emphasis has been on execution, validation, and learning through implementation rather than theory.

Verification:
Because this is an open forum, I’m keeping domain specifics abstract. I’m happy to share technical details privately if you’d like to verify the pipeline or review the approach. I’m doing all of this on a 9800x3d and a 9070xt, more VRAM would be awesome. I’m open to showing you the whole project if you are interested. it will be used for fine tuning a 14b model using LoRA.

I’d probably just end up using it on a cheap home lab where this GPU would over value the trash id pair it with like a shiny turd.

Hi I’m Zeb aka Snowy I’m 20 and I always loved thinkering with tech, from making self hosted minecraft, ark,BeamMP servers on mini PC to trying to get LLM’s running on my 20$ raspberry PI I’ve been limited with my hardware. I threw my together some old and new parts to get my 7600x with a old case, CPU cooler, and 1200w PSU but I’m still missing a GPU. I’m glad I did that because my main PC’s PSU popped recently so I had a good back up at least for light games. about 5 months ago I swapped to linux and I love it so far, Cachy OS is very fast, convenient and lets me run FSR4 fp8 on my Rdna 3 card. Also I’ve really been wanting to try out n8n with LM Studio but lacking the AI power to make it smart. Automating everything would be awesome and making a discord bot for my own DC handout would help a lot too. My dad is also using tech too hes 73 and still always doing photography, he uses topaz and adobe premiere like a champ. That’s my background and tinkering ideas I look forward to tinkering with more tech and learning new crazy things so I will continue on my journey to do so.

I don’t have a project for this type of cards as i don’t care about AI.
but I am interested in how this card or multiple of them would perform in the GPUPI benchmark.

says the person with multiple server cards , that were specially bought to try in gpupi , and are now gathering dust.until I use them again in gpupi or if newer benchmarks came out on hwbot thad support this type of cards.

Sorry I don’t know if this is the proper way to enter because I don’t have anything to link. I would have you give it directly to my daughter not to me to use for game dev or whatever she would like. She is 21 and on the spectrum and I think she would love to get into game dev. and just be able to do some more than she can. She only has a RX 6600 now and I could never afford something like this. We got her an iPad 9th Gen and an Apple pen for Christmas a couple of years ago for drawing. I have a 9070 XT (loving wife stood in line for 2 hours at Cincinnati Micro Center on release day) so I have a capable system. Her PC is her life and connection to friends and how she spends her days. She has a heart of gold and I would love to just give her something more capable than the RX 6600 & R5 5600 she has. Sorry for the story but you cant blame a father for trying to get more for his daughter. So this is more of a nomination for her not me and if chosen you would deal directly with her and I would help if needed. Thank you. Merry Christmas. Happy Holidays.

I have a system similar to this but with a server board with 4 gen 5 x16 slots on an intel xeon max 9480 cpu. I plan on using quantized versions of minimax m2 and devstral 2 for deep research and programming with vllm:) I am curious how big of an impact gen 5 on all 4 gpus will make. I am curious how a system like this would compare to dual rtx pro 6000 cards given those are almost 3X the price of this entire system.

If skies the limit, then I’d jump higher knowing well enough to play around with these. I have semi old tech with a almost no support for the RX6900 and the 5950x CPU.

I wonder how far can it be pushed?

Hi! Posted about my little AI hobby project below. Getting one of those R9700s would allow me to branch out and try a lot more things I’m too GPU poor to play with right now.

The only GPU I put in a server was for Jellyfin transcoding and I have not tried to push any kind of AI against a 1050 lol.
I would love to have local AI tools running that I can play with to help create the local servers and services that I am trying to get running to help my extended family be able to not rely on Google to share photos videos and communicate with each other.

I would like to win one my 15 year old does coding and makes games i would love to have a something that could do whatever we want for projects and I wanted to be able to run some AI models. It would be nice to have a newer gpu for gaming also I wouldn’t mind trying the new upscalers. I’ve got a decent cpu and ram just my graphics card is older and doesn’t have all the new features. Thanks for listening to my rambling…
