Community Giveaway: IcyDock Stuff

I have all these empty bays and I was planning a future Icy Dock purchase anyway. There is one loose ssd in here already and I need to add more as I currently have no backups of anything, ever.

Long story short, I’m a graduate engineer and I’m gonna get a beefy laptop from my work so I’m gonna transplant my ryzen pc in a server case for gaming use with steam play. Also I will turn in my old R710 (2x 5680) used for vitrualization in favor of a Treadripper 1920X ( was planning to transfer the seller some cash down payment for transport 2day and pay the rest on delivery). Due budget constrains, for now at least, I was gonna use Inter Tech 3U for my Threadripper gaming server and Inter Tech 4U for my Ryzen 7 because anything else with caddys is literally double the price on the local market and SH market for cases not dell, hp etc are not existent so only few models can be found as new. Due the fact that I’ve already owned a server, I got hooked up on the fact that I don’t need to open the case to plug in HDDs so the plan was to 3d print some sleds for the 5.25" bays to swap them even if it wasn’t hot-plug =)))))

So yeah. Both of them will do the thing for me.
P.S. I’m on vacantion trip and I’ve just seen the video and I’m more of a lurker on forum so not phhotos from me :slightly_frowning_face: but here is a picture from with my future threadripper.

That 24 x 2.5" one looks absolutely mad and I love it! I would love to be able to use it to get a NAS built up so I can both store my data and my parents pictures and other digital memories and help be a backup for my friend since he currently doesn’t have the money to buy a NAS. It would also give me the ability to have the storage space to play with VMs and sort out all of my data that is well just everywhere.

The 24 x 2.5" would be perfect. My current (old) gaming pc will be replaced in the near future and i want to build a home-storage-server with extras out of the old hardware.

Both of these word rock in my z800 multi station…

Please put me down for both. I’m about to build a media server and either would be extremely useful.

I already have some spinning rust, so U.2 is probably better but I’m happy to work within whatever is available.

I could definitely make use of the two bay adapter in my nas. I have a handful of two and a half inch drive and don’t like the idea of occupying a 3.5" slot with a 2.5" drive.

I have wanting to create a NAS using my old PC case which has 3 5.25" bays. The 24 drive cage would fit perfectly.

Don’t have the pictures yet, as I’m away from home due to war situation, but I would love to have any of the devices for my home nas server that is in the making when I get back…

Would use them in NAS build.

I would use it for the deep silence 6 case I have had setting in my closet for a couple of years now that I’m looking forward to build in soon would be used to hold current projects for video edting on ssd’s and allow the case to hold all the hard drives I need for archiving it would really make a great addition to the case!

I “recently” upgraded my old i7-860 desktop to a Ryzen 5 3600 - but the i7-860 lives on as a Linux server.

The Cooler Master Scout case has plenty of 5.25" drive bays, so I would like to win the “monster” 24 x 2.5" drive bay adapter to turn it into a fully fledged NAS. #whatwouldwendelldo

The slim ODD + 2 x 2.5" drive bay adapter is nice too, but better suited for someone with a SFF case.

Cheers!

The 24 Bay 2.5" version was on my radar and I’ve been thinking of buying one as it would solve a problem for me. My use of this is likely different than most others. I’ll explain how it would help me and throw an offer out to the winner of this unit in case they would prefer an all in one 24 bay 2.5" rack mount unit.

I’m in the process of re-doing my home lab that previously featured large ZFS pools attached to a single Dell R740xd Server. I’m breaking down one ZFS pool with close to a PB on it in order to use the SAS drives as local storage in the 5 main nodes that will be part of a cluster using real time replication. The 5 nodes are the R740xd mentioned above plus with 24 internal 3.5" bays) and 4 nodes that are part of a SuperMicro FatTwin (4 node server). Each of the SM nodes has 8 drive bays each 3.5".
I’m currently testing both Linbit and Ceph with both Proxmox and XCP-NG to see what the magic combination will be. So far it’s looking like Linbit and XCP-NG.

The present ZFS pool uses the R740xd drive bays as well as the following enclosures full of SAS disk (24 bays are Fiber):
Symantic/Promise JX30 16-Bay 3.5" SAS/SATA Storage Array
Dell EMC 15-Slot 3.5" Fiber Channel Disk Array Enclosure - KTN-STL4
Dell EMC 15-Slot 3.5" SAS/SATA Disk Array Enclosure - KTN-STL3
HP 3PAR M6710 24 Bay 2.5" SAS/SATA Drive Enclosure
Netapp DS4246 SAS/SATA 24 Bay 3.5" Drive Enclosure
Dell Compellent SC200 SAS/SATA 12 Bay 3.5" Storage Array
Each of the above SAS enclosures uses dual 6GB SAS ports. Each port is of course 4 SAS lanes.

I have 18 SATA SSDs in the HP 3PAR which saturates the 6GB ports. I have another couple SATA SSD not presently being used.

Once the ZFS pool is completely broken down the shelves will be split between the 5 nodes. I’d like to remove the SSDs from the HP 3 Par into a 24 bay IcyDock because it gives me a big advantage. Each of the SM nodes could directly attached to 6 of the SSD Drives using breakout cables enabling each node to get full bandwidth of SSDs and not be bandwidth limited.

I actually have all cables that would be needed as well as the SSD drives. I would no longer need the HP 3 Par so I would pay it forward and make this available for you to pick another person and I would ship it to them. I could include 2 cables and a flashed LSI SAS controller as well.

I’m sure there is someone more needy than I but I’ll throw this out there. If you win this but would prefer to have a rackmount 24 bay 2.5" enclosure, instead send me a PM.

Hi Wendell, can you message me - I had a response from my utube comment and it said you wanted me to contact you via telegram - This was my comment “SilverStone SST-FS202B - Aluminium Trayless Hot Swap Mobile Rack Backplane / Internal Hard Drive Enclosure for 2x 2.5 Inch SAS/SATA HDD or SSD, fit in any 3.5 Inch Drive Bay, with Lock, black - available on Amazon UK” was my comment - wasn’t sure if it was a scam - This was the reply ! Interesting question

Well. Here goes.

Apocalypse server. I have been playing around for security reasons having parts of my system build not accessing the internet. However getting updates for MU-TH-UR poses a challenge.

This icydock is interesting.

Use this case.

https://www.in-win.com/en/computer-chassis/pe-series/APAC

Have it as a sole purpose for rsyncing arch linux repositories and freebsd repositories . Then link MU-TH-UR to sync to this internal server.

Sorry i am an Alien fan. Check out build log from me in the hardware section of these forums.

Regards Rob

Budget homeserver that’s been a recycling station for all my old desktop parts. Recently managed to find a used case for it that doesn’t force me to duct tape all my drives into place, but as these things go you always run out of space. Currently occupied the 3x 5.25" bay with 2 HDD’s sitting in my desktop’s fractal 3.5" chassis and a 3rd laying ontop of it. The whole setup is macgyvered to be held in place (and bonus absorb vibrations) by a bunch of acoustic foam I had laying around. Which obviously doesn’t help much with heat. Have a few spare old SSDs here that could fit into it nicely, the HDDs need retiring anyway, some of them have up to 8 years operating hours on them.

Pictures are a little older as I was taking them on initial case transfer, currently houses 6 HDDs and 4 SSD’s in total

I’m interested in both. I plan on upgrading to a new VM server / workstation / gaming rig. The current rig sits in a Corsair 600T with 4 5.25" bays. Both would sit nicely in this case with newer hardware.

This would make an awesome addition to my home NAS/Virtual Machine Server.

I have the perfect spot reserved for this beast!

The 24 x 2.5 would finally allow me to use my drives I have laying around that I need to install!

I am interested in winning this product for my brother I don’t really know how any of this works he’s actually the computer guy and I don’t know if I’ll be able to reply on this since I don’t really understand how a lot of this stuff works I’m sure he’ll make videos and post down here if you ask him to

ICY DOCK MB924IP-B - 24 x 2.5" SAS/SATA HDD/SDD Hot Swap Cage

Hey Wendell, my plan is a very powerful server/workstation/gaming build that will need hot swap bays. I was looking into ICYDOCK’s 8 hot swap bay for 2.5" drive at first but I can utilize the 24 hot swap bay. My build will consist of:

  • Rosewill RSV-L4000U 4U rack mounted chassis
  • ASUS Pro WS WRX80E-SAGE SE WiFi mobo w/ Threadripper Pro 5975WX 32C/64T CPU
  • x1 nVidia RTX 3080 or 3090 GPU & x1 nVidia Quadro RTX 4000
  • x2 PCI-e M.2 NVME cards (including the one included with the mobo)
  • x2 3.5" 4 hot swap bays (or x1 if I get the 24 hot swap bay)

Essentially running UNRAID and then run a couple of virtual machines and some docker containers. I did somewhat have a similar build before, unfortunately lost everything due to a house fire. So I’m having to rebuild everything from scratch, yeah it sucks but at least I have a plan for a new build. Any who that’s my plan. I promise I’m not a bot, I am a first time poster but longtime follower of your channel along with Linus Tech Tips & JayzTwoCents. @PSAdmiralAustin my Twitter account to prove I’m not Skynet! lol
