X299 Motherboard vrm Topic

This topic is ment to discuss all about the X299 platform,
motherboards and vrm’s configurations.

About the X299 vrm configuration:

Compaired to X99, X299 differs a bit wenn it comes to its vrm implementation.
The reason for this is that there are 2 different type of cpu´s designed for this platform, namely Skylake-X and Kabylake-X cpu´s.
The difference between Skylake-X and Kabylake-X cpu’s from a vrm perspective is that Skylake-X cpu’s have a FiVR ( Fully intergrated voltage regulator) on which Kabylake-X cpu´s dont.
This kinda makes the vrm implementations on X299 a littlebit more complex.
The Kabylake-X cpu´s dont have a FiVR which means that they need,
2 additional voltage imput rails for Vccsa and Vccio.

This particular board is using a very nice and beefy and first fully digital,
vrm implementation from Intersil.
The ISL69138 is a 7 phase fully digital flex mode pwm.
And i´m personally very excited about this new implementation.

Now lets get more into the details of the vrm on this board.

Main vcore vrm x2:

  • pwm: ISL69138 which running in 6+1 phase mode.
6 phases are being doubled to 12 for Vcore (Vcc) using ISL6617 doublers.
And the +1 phase is used for the SystemAgent VCCSA imput rail.
Then one additional IR35204 pwm provides the last phase needed for io voltage imput rail VCCio ( Qpi/Vtt)

  • powerstages: ISL99227 Smart Powerstages which are rated for 60A.
Are used for the main vcore vrm.
    Vccsa gets a 40A Drmos.
    Vccio gets a 50A IR3556 powerstage.

  • Inductors: 71A

  • caps: 10K

Memory vrm:

  • pwm: 2x ISL69133 One for each set of 4 dimm slots.
  • powerstages: 2x ISL99227 60A one for each set of 4 dimm slots.
  • DDRvpp: comes from a 9A IR3899 single phase vrm.

PCB Breakdown:

Asrock:

-Asrock X299 Pro Gaming i9.
-Asrock X299 Taichi XE.
-Asrock X299 OC Formula.

Main vrm:

  • pwm: ISL69138 running in 6+1 phase mode.
6 Phases being doubled to 12 using ISL6617 phase doublers.
Then Two additional ISL69138 pwm´s control the Vccsa and Vccio vrm´s.

  • Powerstages: For the main Vcc Vcore vrm they used ISL99227B 60A Smart powerstages.
These powerstages offering internal temperature sensing.
Vccsa gets a ISL99227F SPS also rated for 60A.
Vccio gets a Fairchild semiconductor FDPC5030 25A dual N-channel mosfet.

Inductors: 65A.

Caps: 12K

Memory vrm’s x2.

  • pwm: 2x ISL5913 pwm´s providing 2 phases each for each set of four dimm slots.

  • mosfets: Failchild FDPC5030 25A.

Asrock X299 Extreme 4:

This vrm is totally different then its 2 bigger brothers.

Main vrm:

  • pwm: 1x ISL69138 running in 5+1 phase mode.
This board sorta kinda looks like a 10 phase but its not really a proper doubling scheme.
Because each pwm channel gets two ISL6596 mosfets drivers,
who have their imputs tight together.
Its kinda an odd way to create 10 phases, and it shouldnt also been concidered as a 10 phase.
The +1 phase is used for Vccsa.
Vccio gets a single phase from an additional Anpec APW8720 pwm with intergrated gate driver.

Mosfets: Fairchild FDPC5030 25A Dual-Nchannel fets.
Vccsa and Vccio are getting the same fets.

Inductors: 60A

Caps: 12K

Memory vrm x2:

  • pwm: 2x Upi semiconductor Up1674 providing 2 phases each for each set of 4 dimm slots.
  • mosfets: same Fairchild FDPC5030 25A agaIn.

This particular board has a significant weaker vrm design compaired to their bigger brothers.
I would not recommend to use a higher then 8 core count cpu on this board.

Asrock X299-E itx.

Main Vcore vrm:

pwm: ISL69138 running in 6+1 phase mode.
6 straight phases are used for Vcc vcore,
And the +1 phase is used for Vccsa.
Vccio gets its phase from a second ISL69138 pwm.

  • powerstages: ISL99227 F 60A SPS for Vcore and Vccsa.
And the Vccio gets a Sinopower SM7341EH Dual-Nchannel mosfet,
    rated about 25A.

  • Inductors: 60A.

  • caps 12K.

Gigabyte:

-Gigabyte X299 Designare EX.
-Gigabyte X299 Gaming 7 pro.

Main vrm:

  • pwm: ISL69138 in 6+1 phase mode.
6 Phases being doubled to 12 phases using ISL6617 phase doublers.
And the +1 phase is used for VCCSA (system agent).
Vccio gets it phase from a ISL69133 4 phase pwm.

  • powerstages: ISL99227 60A SPS powerstages for the entire vrm.

  • Inductors: 51A
    -Caps: 10K.

Memory vrm x2.

  • pwm: 2x ISL69133 4 phase pwm in 2+1 phase mode.
Providing 2 phases each for each set of 4 dimm slots.
And the +1 phases on each pwm is for the minor DDRvpp rail.

  • powerstages: ISL99227 60A SPS´s again.

This is a very high quality vrm that is identical on both boards.
Very nice to also see the ISL implementation on the above boards.

-Gigabyte X299 Gaming 9
-Gigabyte X299 Gaming 3

The vrm on the Gaming 9 and 3 differ allot from the Designare EX and Gaming 7.
Its a totally different vrm implementation, since Gigabyte used their more commonly used IR implementation.

Main vrm:

  • pwm: IR35201 running in 8+0 phase mode.
8 straight phases being used for Vcore.
Vccsa and Vccio getting their phases from an IR35204 pwm.

  • powerstages: IR3556 50A powestages used for Vcc Vcore.
Vccsa and Vccio are getting IR3553 40A powerstages respectively.

  • inductors 76A Cooperbussmann.

  • caps: 10K.

Memory vrm x2:

  • pwm: 2x IR35204 2+1 phase mode.
They provide 2 phases each for each set of 4 dimm slots.
And the +1 phases are used for DDR-vpp minor rail.

  • powerstages: IR3553 40A.

  • Inductors: 60A.

  • Caps: 10K.

8 true phases used for Vcc vcore.
Vccsa and Vccio get their phases from an additional ASP1405 pwm.
