WRX80 vs TRX40, Worth the Jump / Price Difference?

To add some relevant information here (may make a thread about it); I found a new cooler that works well for Threadripper.

It is the Silverstone IceGem 360. It is made for Threadripper as it has a coldplate specifically designed to match the threadripper IHS.
So far the performance is amazing with me hitting 89C on a Stress test with the wattage turned upto 340 (PPT), TDC(220), EDC(330). When running at stock settings I can only get 76C max no matter how hard I hit it. I left it with CB R23 on a constant loop and thats all I got… 74C in Prime95 SmallFFT… Using 2x NOCTUA iPPC 3000 fans and 1x Cougar 120mm PWM (other Noctua IPPC in the mail finally, after months of being out of stock). I only ramp fans to 100% @ 80C… 72C is when I jump to 75%… so it stays around 2300RPM to keep this 74C temp. Honestly would probably run cooler if I had more agressive fan curves but this iPPC gets quite loud over 2400rpm.
Gaming in Riftbreaker using 24T (48% CPU usage) kept the temps around 62C with a few spikes to 67C…

I am super happy to have found this cooler after dealing with coolers that don’t cover the whole IHS, or large but not impressive air coolers (I don’t like high TDP air cooling anyway)… I didn’t want a custom loop and I know the enermax liqtech has flaws…
Will go around to spread the news now in a few places, since I’m sure other people are in the same position as me… the cooler selection for TR is just terrible to say the least.

I haven’t seen anything one way or the other. I saw rumors of them doing Threadripper Pro 5000 series, but I also saw that they would bring Threadripper 5000 series also… but possibly only 2 SKU’s instead of 3.

Look good if to be true!

Sounds great! I just have the be quite cooler for now. March is going to be an expensive time haha.

I hope my puny cooler on my TR PRO Thinkstation is able to be upgraded, as i Currently have the TR 3945 and hoping to get the new 32 core if possible.

As long as your workstation has space for it, there is nothing that prevents you from installing any TRX cooler on it.

I liked this AIO when I first saw it released as a much needed entry into the TR cooling pantheon with a proper full coverage block.
My disappointment then was it was nowhere to be found in stock.
Happy to see it at retailers finally

You mean the Silverstone IceGem 360? I know it isn’t on Newegg… I stumbled upon it randomly on Amazon and didn’t even find any proper reviews anywhere (atleast actually tested on threadripper) so I decided to test it myself.

My Asus Pro Sage WRX80 Wifi was definitely worth the price jump for my 3955WX. Why spend so much money on a system just to stop a few inches shy of the whole package? I’m using mine as a KVM workstation and have never had a problem with it. It does every fringe nerd requirement I have ever needed. AMD-V, IOMMU, SR-IOV, Bifurcation, PXE, etc.

Agreed, I love my TR 3945WX it was a huge upgrade for me and was worth the price cost over my previous i9 9940X system as Now I don’t have to worry about PCI lanes/slots. can run All the GPUs I need and all the NVME storage I want and just ordered a Optane 5800x and still have plenty of expansion left, although going to be upgrading to a 5975WX when I can and if my Lenovo motherboard supports it.

That’s the plan for me also! I’m loving my new wrx80 system and can’t wait for the new pro chips to come out and watercool it :relaxed:

yup same here, going to liquid cooling my 5975WX and NVIDIA A100, going to be a great system for a few years

What Fittings / Blocks are you going for? if it works out similar time we should do a comparison

not 100% sure yet, going to be my first LC system, although most likely going to pay work to do it for me and see if its even possible as im using a Think station P920 what has a proprietary mobo and vendor locked CPU, so i may just take my current 256GB Mem/GPU/NVMEs out and just rebuild from new when i get my 5975WX and keep my current TR PRO 3945 as a spare machine.

But if i plan to do it myself id love to chat with you and see how i could go about LC a system! A100 waterblocks are a pain, but im most likley going back to an RTX A6000 soon anyway as the A100 i got for testing and its just overkill for 99% of the ML projects im using it for.

Dam I’m jealous of the A6000, sure happy to help out!

Could rip it out and put it in a new case, as much as ekwb get a bad rep now and then they do have so nice pro blocks for the A series’ and that with a manifold could be good that is if you are also making use of multi gpus etc ?

Multi GPU I can take advantage off yeah for Training AI and using it for my simulations and tempted to do so as I have a few A6000s laying around my office i got sent for testing. As I love my A100 GPU but man its a PITA to keep cool and quiet. so might switch to 2x A6000s Vs 1x A100.

And Honestly since im looking at a new case and stuff anyway, I dont mind buying a new motherboard as id be able to sell one of my old GPUs to cover the cost of the ASUS board as its around £850 last time i checked and not really a fan of Gigabyte so it seems the only logical option as the Supermicro one seems a little too barebones for my liking at a pricepoint that high for a motherboard.

Yeah the sage pro is a nice motherboard I only opted for the gigabyte board for the TB3 compatibility as my home server runs off of that and not USB C.

But I’m sure depending on case and what rads you could fit in there you’d be able to cool the a100 no ?

But yeah maybe 2 x a6000 is the way to go and oh man to have all that juicy vram

I’m going to be stuck with a measly 32gb haha.

A100 Block:

A600 Block:

Manifold:

Im planning to go for the Fractal design 7xl as its huge enough to be able to fit all my hardware 100%.

I just did a quick sketchup in GIMP:

and heres what my new system will look like. + an Optane 5800x Drive here and there when i can afford more than 1.
just need to do the research on the case and parts of what i need and how to watercool and get someone at work to maybe make me a mockup as im awful with anything CAD/Art wise as you can tell by my wonderful GIMP masterpiece.

Lovely work!

Yeah the 7 XL is a beast.

Have you considered water cooling your CPU as well or is that going to be air cooled?
