went to make post about how proton mail is looking sus these days and realized there is no digital privacy and freedom based section. what gives? or why can i not find it?
yes id love to self host but my setup took a big wallop and life is kick my ass with house and car repairs i simply don’t have the man hours to bring my setup back on line, not for a few years.
Well, in past those generally fit into Tech Policy & News, which admittedly may not fit perfectly under hardware, but the forum software is limited by the manner in which you can categorize things.
If you think we need a dedicated section for it, I’ll bring it up with the council of elders.
That would be great! With Louis Rossmann rising to fame and proton and mullvad becoming common knowledge and modern law and policy starting to come to head it would be great to talk about paid services and degoogleing in broad sense and in one place.
Could be slippery next thing you DNS conversions are happening here and not in networking etc etc
Although dedicated services could really use a place for discussion at the least. I’m sure there is some brain storming that could be had here. Maybe a tag?
Generally DeGoogled might be a droid section, rossmann videos in policey idk where or complain or ask advice about paid services like proton or mullvad??? One home would be pretty sweet.
Because this doesn’t exist in the real world. Any efforts to the contrary are just an illusion they allow you to hold. Getting riled up about it at this point is sort of pointless. The time to do that was 20 or 30 years ago.
Exactly!
When you consider just how many commercial entities that actively monitor net traffic.
Marketing firms, government agencies, ect. Have all tracked any user online or on cell now for decades.
This list does not even touch the illicit tracking or the non professional tracking done by industries or small home offices or concerned parents.
Simply put, If you have something to hide its damn stupid to keep it in a computer thats connected in any way to the net.
Anyway we can discuss ways to secure data but every way has their own unique pros and cons.
I’m was one of those concerned parents, i monitored my kids activities until they were 18. Monitored for pron, illicit substances (was never a real problem) , potential predators such. Also monitored text messages from their phones and online accounts (apple microsoft google etc) looking for potential predators. And i told them i was doing that so they wouldn’t send inappropriate pictures and whatnot. I didn’t tell them exactly what i was monitoring to keep them honest.
Are you willing to hand over your entire phone’s contents, what’s installed, all chat logs, all photos, everything, to the volunteer and no-background-check administration team here, for the purpose of allowing this forum to adhere to the legal rules that we might see in the near future, for nothing more than the privilege of being allowed to post?
No, I assume all of that information is stored and processed in realtime and sold off to interested parties though. I imagine at some point (due to garbage like id verification); I will be back in my office playing with servos and blc motors instead of enjoying peoples company on the internet.
I’d rather keep complaining rather than accept it, hence my profile clippie per rossmann
Then as the ultimate middle finger I will get back to self hosting when time and money. Right proper serviceable chassis and not zip-tied HDD cages
Ultimately it’s principle its me and my data, pay me or I’ll pay for privacey or do it my self.
Also the first up part is medical and government all that is getting hoovered up. Imaged being a cop and getting blasted because your data got bought by the cartel.
Freedom and privacy are a spectrum. And however bad it is today, it can get a lot worse tomorrow. And it will if we all decide freedom and privacy are pointless to care about.
The main point I was trying to get at is we can complain all we want but this well is too deep and too well connected to drain without going back 40 years in tech development and starting over from the ground up.
Do we have the resources to build new silicon, stretch millions of miles of cable, launch satellites, build towers, etc? All of that is exposed today.
The people who do have these resources are the same people who benefit and prosper from the status quo and will continue to improve the panopticon that is our reality.
I frankly neither agree that all of that is necessary, nor that it even arguably could be. I think that this sort of thinking is an easy excuse; a convenient mental trap that justifies one’s facebook use (or Twitter, or bsky, or 'gram, whatever your poison) rather than recognizes the situation as it is.
Huh, that its a really sideways attempt to argue I’m wrong. I can’t say I use any of those sites.
I’m here, one car forum, a little YouTube for interesting technical content, discord, irc, hugging face, and GitHub. Though my personal browsing habits are not really core to the discussion are they?
The problem starts with humans you have to teach kid accountability and balance. In the mean time I deegogle and block DNS when and where i can etc etc I’ll also teach people the hidden costs of convenience
I’m an avid youtube watcher and have noticed tonnes of ads for services to remove your data from above-board data brokers. Problem is, I don’t trust any company that pays for massive marketing campaigns like that ahem Incogni cough Deleteme
Still wouldn’t mind trying one that’s ‘trusted’.
I recently found out that Ryan Montomergy has a business/site where they offer this service, and my understanding is it’s like $12 bucks a pop.
Would anyone recommend this?
