it doesn’t even use the freebsd core. they forked that shit from the jump. the two systems are farther from binary compatible than freebsd and linux.
also @Lauritzen no they really aren’t.

Yeah they use alot of the same programs (for example bash is a program) and implement a bunch of open source stuff while boasting about it, but i’m not too familiar with them actually giving much back to the open source community
well, there’s CUPS
oh, and I’m pretty sure we have apple to thank (indirectly) for shitty, dependency heavy JS/python package managers.
At this point Apple cares less about open source than Microsoft.
CUPS is pretty big tho
Here’s the story. The only reason I started using Windows was that “Calkwalk” (now Sonar, and various other) was something that super appealed to me and it came free with some piece of music equipment. I still love Sonar Artist. I just can’t take the complete take over of MY machine by Windows anymore. So many privacy invasions built in now… I’ve been a Linux fan since 1996, with my first distro being Slackware. I’ve dual booted for a long time. Not anymore. Linux only starting last year. No problems. I love it. I tend toward the Debian and Ubuntu releases. The wonders of apt is why I like them so much. With GNU/Linux you can make your machine do anything you want. I’m getting used to Tracktion T7 as my new DAW. It’s way different, but powerful. Learning curve is killing me. It will be worth it though. ![]()

I have only used Linux for just about 5 years. I am an idiot. If I can do it, anyone can.
Ardour 4 aint no slouch either. Reaper also has a port in progress.
Only using Windows for games i cannot play on linux…
Absolutely everything else i do in Linux. Mint at the home computer. Debian, Ubuntu and CentOS at the university. For about…6-7 years now or sth…
I always keep a windows 7 VM for MS office because my supervisor and some colleagues only use powerpoint and word but there is nothing to do about that…
True but Microsoft has went all “aren’t we great for supporting open source” recently.
Hey guys windows has bash now its linux.
We don’t need microsoft’s money they can all fuck off.
That’s because they need to disclose 20% of their code to get darpa/norad contracts under the new regulations. they let go anything that won’t meaningfully affect their bottom line.
But… we now have VSCode, dotnet, and PowerShell /s
I use Ubuntu and its primarily what I use. The only tasks I use Windows for is gaming and video capture(capturing games), since I’ve phased out the need for using Microsoft products(like outlook and Office), Adobe products, and Windows only programs. The main thing I use my computers for is web browsing and music, which any OS can do(within reason), so its nice that I can use a free(as in freedom) OS that is simple to use and does everything I need(and more, its been a good learning experience). Windows 8 is what it took for me to open my eyes and start looking for other options and really start investing in them as I feared a turd like Windows 10 would happen.
Linux is a kernel. BSD is a distribution.. They are different. Linux uses GNU resources (such as bash, GCC, and most of the system). BSD uses there own Unix like system. The similarities are because of their Unix like structures. You can run GNU stuff with other kernels (not only Linux) as well. Hope that helps.
Back to the topic before more retardation happens.
Quick. Someone hit me with that Kermit meme where he says he should/could say something but won’t. I’m on mobile D:
BSD isn’t a kernel. The D stands for distribution. there is no single, monolithic BSD kernel. every BSD project maintains their own unique kernel and base system, and aren’t necessarily binary compatible. FreeBSD is nearly gnu free at this point, though other BSDs retain some vestiges. get your facts straight if you’re going to condescend to people boyo
I’d just like to interject for a moment, and say that what you are referring to as “Kermit” is actually a system that uses Kermit atop Henson, or as I’ve recently been referring to it, Kermit Plus Henson …
