What Would be Your Perfect Laptop?

.... a desktop

jk. For me to really want a laptop it needs:

  • weigh < 2lb
  • 15" 1440p screen
  • 8+hr on-screen time
  • gigabit wireless to desktop vm or network storage
  • screen hinge that doesn't weaken

@PH33R More manufacturers should definitely include a bare bones model of their laptop, so that consumers can install their own HDD and memory. Would save a lot of people a lot of money.

-14-15" display with little bezels (like Dell's XPS 13)
-1080p panel IPS decently bright 75Hz and G-Sync or Freesync
-i7 CPU quad-core with HT
-A GPU like a 970M or something similar good to play games at high settings at 1080p with a decent framerate
-16GB of RAM
-M.2 SSD 256GB + 1TB HDD
-Intel Gigabit LAN + Intel WiFi AC/Bluetooth card
-As much ports as possible but without a VGA one
-White backlit keyboard with numbpad that can double as macro array of keys
-Glass touchpad
-1080p webcam with autofocus + stereo mics
-Fingerprint reader (I'm so used to have it that I'm really looking for something like that)
-Good isolated audio card with decent DAC
-Decent speakers
-Docking capabilities through PCI
-Easly upgradable
-Magsafe-like charging connector (I stole this one but it's actually a great concept)
-A battery that will last at least 6Hrs doing docks and browsing the web with WiFi
-Good compromise between thermals and acustics (75Ā°C or below during load would be sweet)
-Carbon fiber for the inside and thick alluminum for the exterior
-NO stickers or big illuminated logos behind the screen but just a suddle laser cutted name in a corner
-Activity LEDs on the top of the keyboard and keys with little LEDs to indicate WiFi, audio and caps status
-Should not weight like a neutron star (or being as hot, but I already mentioned that)

Last but not least: a removable battery!

Laptop with expandable Watercooling and a useful HUB-System.

Laptop itself:
* Low power but i7xxxx k CPU or 16 Core Xeon (Workstation-Edition?)
* 32/64GB (ECC) RAM
* Internal 2TB PCIe SSD
* Powerful Battery, about 12hrs on half load/6hrs on full load
* 15.6" IPS Screen with 144Hz and <5ms
* Mechanical Keyboard
* on the Backside 5xUSB3.x and dedicated SATA Plug for exended Storage possibility
* left sidepanel dual HDMI, full DVI, Audio plug
* right side 2x SIM Card Slots for your mobile internet needs all over the world and 2x SDHC Slots (up to 2x128GB)
* front side 2x RJ45
* internal WLAN of the newest edition
* internal GPU of the newest edition
* completly watercooled

On the bottom is a PCIe connector for the GAMEHUB(R) or WORKHUB(R) which are basically hardcore extensions for the laptop:

Both Game and Workhub feature only one intake (240/200V Power) and connect via the hidden PCIe connector on the laptop.

As the Laptop is watercooled, the watercooling loop has quick detach connectors between the bottom of the laptop and the game/workhub.

After connecting to the HUB the loop extends into both parts of the system for a better gaming experience.

GAMEHUB Features:

  • BOSE Micro Sound System
  • (as the back of the laptop is blocked) 5xUSB3.0 Superspeed on the HUB + MIC/Speakeroutput
  • GPU Slot for a 350mm GPU (like a GTX980Ti) of course you can connect that to the watercooling too
  • Additional water tank for better cooling
  • Additional 4x 120mm fans that dissapate the heat
  • All graphic ports are forwarded to the side of the HUB

WORKHUB Features:

  • BOSE Micro Sound System
  • 10xUSB3.0 Superspeed on the HUB + 10G LAN Connector + MIC/Speakeroutput
  • GPU Slot for a 350mm GPU (like a Quadro) no Watercooling connector
  • however, a full USV that keeps up the power for at least 2 hours**
  • Additional 4x 120mm fans that dissapate the heat
  • All graphic ports are forwarded to the side of the HUB

** the battery only engages if you work without the HUB to expand the battery lifespan. That's why the USV is a useful addition.

My great drawing lol:

Would be great if you can get me some of the revenue you made with this idea (if you did) ;)

Getac W500 server

  1. 2 Batteries
  2. 4 SSD's
  3. 32gb RAM
  4. PC 122 Keyboard with Cherry MX greens.

i own it. x1 carbon for work and home. however i dont need a gpu

1920x1200p IPS display with 120hz refresh rate.
I7 6700HQ
16GB ram
GTX 970M or 965M
512GB 950 Pro
macbook touchpad
Intel AC wireless
quiet but tactile keys
enough battery to get me through 6 hours of use with full brightness
Nvidia optimus compatible
as thin as it can be without; comprimising any of the hardware specs or battery life, and not sound like a stock R9 290x in uber mode

a 15 inch laptop with:
IntelĀ® Coreā„¢ i7-5750HQ cpu(has iris pro 6200 which is basicly a dual gpu for VM passthrough)
1920x1080 Gorilla Glass screen (some dell xps models have)
a carbon fiber/cavlar mix body with titainium hinges.
1x usb 2.0port(for recovery software) + 3x usb 3.1/thunderbolt ports.
3x ngff(aka m.2) slots=1 ssd +1 "wifi blutooth combo" + 1 wigig or 4g Mobile Broadband card.
2x sata=1 ssd + 1 bluraydrive/hddtray
1x gigabit ethernet
1x dvi port (easy to find adapters also able to override bad edid info on cheap tv's/monitors)
1x headphone jack.
4x ramslots(much easier to find 4gb or 8gb sticks then 16gb)
1x 9 cell battery

all ports should be reinforced with steel boxes to prevent them from coming loose due to heavy cables.

a silver/copper heatsink with pyrolytic graphite heatpipes.(not as good as graphene but should keep the cpu way cooler then current designs)
{good quality graphite is about 3x better then copper at spreading heat horizontally but not vertically}

a option of thunderblot 3.0 gpu dock with ether full pci-e x16 slot or MXM type A slot. (the mxm version should be small enough to fit in a laptop bag pocket)

lastly fully unlocked custom bios support(oems rarely update a more or less opensource bios would increase OS and hardware compatibility considerably)

12-13 inch tablet with attachable keyboard (something very close to the Surface Pro 4)

  • Intel Core m5-6Y57 or m7-6Y75 (don't need a ton of power on the go, battery life and good thermals are key)
  • 16gb Memory
  • 256gb PCIe SSD
  • 1920x1200 screen
  • Fast WiFi (AC in 3x3 MIMO)?
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • 2 USB 3.1 Type A Ports
  • 1 USB 3.1/Thunderbolt 3/DisplayPort on USB Type C connector
  • Headset port
  • 1080p front facing camera
  • Ambient light, gyroscope, accelerometer
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Metal construction with Gorilla Glass screen
  • Pressure sensitive Pen/Stylus(included)
  • Decent, Loud speaker(s) maybe front facing like my Nexus 6
  • Very fast MicroSD Slot that allows the card to be fully inside the tablet for expanded storage
  • Basic detachable keyboard with an excellent glass trackpad(included in base models)
  • Mobile GPU detachable keyboard with better keys, larger glass trackpad, and high capacity battery
    • (multiple GPU options for above dock such as 940m, 960m, 970m, and 980m at varying price points)
  • Basic desktop dock with more DisplayPort outputs, ethernet, audio, and more USB ports
  • GPU desktop dock that supports any desktop GPU and has the above ports

Model with basic keyboard dock, Core m5, and other options listed priced at around $1,200 USD

14" 1080p IPS screen, huge battery, i3, lots of RAM and a 240GB SSD and I'm happy. Got one already though....
Laptops are laptops, not desktops.... Battery life is the most important bit for me.

Hmmm for me....

i7/i5 Skylake with igpu
1366x768 or something low res but looks decent on screen
Massive battery life capacity around 10 amps
Decent keyboard and mousepad that has its own
Wifi ofc

Just enough to be watch hd videos and a word processing machine. very little to no gaming on this.

Full titanium body with no branding, but maybe a penguin.

Mechanical keyboard with aluminum keys.

12+ hour battery life.

15.6 inch oled panel at 1440p with sapphire crystal

1tb nvme ssd with dual boot pre-installed with Kali and arch.

Gtx 980m embedded in the docking station. Best Intel hd graphics card ( want slimness )

4 USB 3 ports, and 2 usb c

Rj45 gigabit Ethernet port

Wlan card by atheros that allows extendable antennas and packet injection.

32gb ddr4 2133mhz

Core i7 sky lake at 3.2 - 4ghz

Power port that is also another usb c port.

Has to be less than half an inch thick with a watchband hinge like the yoga 900.

Lifetime warranty

I can just imagine what you're planning to do with this laptop...

My perfect laptop would have

~a chassis like the old thinkpads
~a new skylake or a broadwell quad core mobile I7 OR one of the high end FX mobile APUs
~with light usage it should last about 9-10 hours
~have a 1080p display
~be able to turn wireless on and off manually
~ usb type C
~an opensource way that is linux compatible to connect a gpu
~256 gigabyte NVMe ssd
~a 1 terabyte hard drive
~vga and hdmi and displayport
~all the stuff is modular with batteries that you can hot swap
a keyboard that is on par with the thinkpad keyboards
~will survive hell and back
~operating systems will be a mix of windows 10 and open suse and linux mint
~gigabit ethernet
~802.11ac wifi with opensource drivers
~an opensource fingerprint scanner

Any thing that comes close is WAY out of my price range

Basically something similar to Dell XPS 13 with Mini Display Port(s), i7 and 16 GB of RAM.

Oh you know... a little bit of this and a little bit of that. Learning Kali / Pentesting and Doom.

Combine the Macbook pro 13 and the 2015 Macbook.
- MBP performance
- MBP screen size
- Fanless (and doesn't overheat)
- All metal hinge
- A bit sturdier keyboard would be nice
- Change all ports to USB-C

As soon as you said that you needed "packet injection", I instantly knew what you were going to do with that ;)

Kali has so many tools, it's amazing. So far, i've only really used the aircrack-ng suite in it.

Honestly, the one I have now.
Eurocom X3/Clevo P157SM, upgradeable CPU, upgradeable GPU, three hard drive bays, and a max of 32 gigs of ram in one (quite thick) 15.6 inch machine.

What they have now, just cheaper. XD
