What does lspci report if you boot it under Linux? You can get quite a bit of info from the vendor ID.

I remember back in the day I bought a soundcard that turned out to be a rebranded paperweight, due to no drivers for Linux. I could prove this and get my money back to buy a properly supported card. This was in 2002-ish.
