The POWER and PowerPC General Discussion / News Thread

Theres altivec and altivec-less options for a ridiculous amount of things. I wish I knew where to look up white papers. Yall wouldn’t see me for months.

yeah, e6500 has it… but there’s yet another caveat: even though they implement a modern ISA (i think 2.07, equivalent to POWER8) their altivec unit is also big endian only so little endian distributions won’t run (unless compiled with altivec off)

you just can’t win with these things

I think that user-oriented cores will be coming back sooner rather than laher, or never as some users believe. Theres kind of a ‘power hungry’ mob now, def bigger than before.

Maybe void will inspire others to do the same. Who knows.

Maybe we’ll remain a tiny island of users xD

Also, fresh images and rootfs tarballs are up, as always at https://void-power.octaforge.org/live/current/

grab em while they hot

Shit I need to do that.

Updated op. Thought appropriate.

Surprised theres been no actian here today lol

It all circles back to software. Look at what apple is doing on iPads and then look at current notebooks. Lite weight laptops.

Windows its not a great fit on ultra portable super streamlined devices.

It like an anvil we drag behind us. Software sure is coded to windows. There in is the problem.

Now companyies are fleeing to the cloud if they can even make it work as a cloud service. Even when people still have CRAP internet.

Stats are cool.

What kinda stats.

Inb4 i kill another ibook building linuxpackages.

don’t kill ibooks

if you have spare ibooks (or any relevant ppc hardware, G4/G5/any supported POWER) to kill, donate ibooks, i can put them to (non-packaging, ecosystem improving) use

Honestly I don’t actually know whats wrong with it now its always been finnicky lol. Its just the last thing I had it do was build 32 bit packages for someone from macports lol.

RN I have an A1138 as my main machine and omg I love it. DREAM laptop would have a 9800 in it buuuuut… Oh well.

Some stuff from Twitter:

GRSecurity has an 8-core Blackbird; they say it compiles Linux (kernel) in ~11 minutes

Vikings is preparing a mass Blackbird (and maybe Talos II also?) shipment to Europe to reduce shipping

and Raptor Computing is trying to convince Tim Sweeney of Epic Games to let them port Fortnite

dude… a fornite linux ARM (ok, windows also) port would be so nice for the community… would give so much visibility…

@stenstorp is anyone building musl packages yet?

Look at this tidbit?

https://amigakit.amiga.store/product_info.php?products_id=1303

There should be some in these repos:
https://auto.void-power.octaforge.org/current/ppc/musl/ and
https://repo.voidlinux.de/current

want to take some screen captures for broll for me? I am just applying a firmware update to the talosII to finally FINALLY get my video out the door.

The community excitement around this platform has been a lot and every time I go to make the review live, things have changed and a lot of cool new stuff exists for power 9.

There are a lot of talented people working on it. A LOT it is a bit scary, tbh.
