Tek Rumors 0019: Microsoft Backpedals: Windows Store PC Exclusives Coming to Steam | AMD RX 460 Benchmarks Leaked | Apple will Implement new Proprietary File System on OS X

If you remember not to long ago. Microsoft said IT LOVES THE PC GAMING COMMUNITY.. but instead decided to "Love Us" by bringing it's exclusives to the PC, and making most of them available exclusively to the Windows store.. for example Rise of the Tomb Raider for example, Minecraft, and even Quantum break? well NOT ANYMORE.. newer games in the future will be available on Steam. though there is no clue yet if older titles like Gears of War, Quantum Break, and even Forza will be available to Steam.. but newer titles are going to come to steam officially.

If you've been excited for Polaris like I am, then you're probably excited for benchmarks.. well the RX 460 Benchmarks have leaked. and it performs somewhere above a GTX 960, and below a GTX 970. if that would give you somewhat of a mental picture. according to 3D mark anyways..

SINGLE CONFIG

CROSSFIRE

of course take this with a grain of salt.. however since AMD has announced that some RX 480s are able to reach 1500mhz with some voltage tweaks... imagine with a RX 460...

Apple is going to implement a new filesystem on OS X for "Security Purposes(?)" the new File system is called "APFS" [Apple FileSystem]

What it does compared to others are the following.. (Just a few)

  • Native encryption support (not Filevault) - single-key, multi-key, and per-key files and metadata.
  • Nano-second time stamps (improvement over 1 second in HFS+) - important for tracking order of operations
  • copy-on-write for additional crash and power loss protection
  • Fast directory sizing for near instant queries
  • Snapshots and clones for better backup management with Time Machine
  • Space sharing - thin provisioning.

While it's still still in beta and in development, it looks to add a lot of support over HFS+ for features usually found in newer file systems such as ZFS.

How is the RX 460 ranked above an GTX 960 when the GPU was cut down to more than half from the RX 470, which was around the 970's level of performance? The GPU seems to better compare against the R7 270X if the performance was cut by that much.

Take this with a grain of salt. and two.. if you bothered to read what I wrote it has performance in between the 960 and the 970 guy..

Interesting idea of using Steam, but does that mean MS will be abandoning UWP for it's exclusive titles? Or bringing it to Steam because it lost a ton of sales on Rise of the Tomb Raider?

No.. they will still be available on the Windows store for those who want it.. but it will also be available on steam.

And yet it has some difficulty outperforming a 270X? Don't know if that's really in between a 960 and a 970. Unless one of us has incorrect info.

It's rumored jesus christ.. 3D mark isn't the end all benchmark. read the article sources.

It's bad enough that they only make cross platform xbox one games avaliable for windows 10 only...

AMD stated that Polaris 11 is Polaris 10 PRO cut in half, but it turns out to be less than half.

RX 470:
≈ 5 Tflops
36 CUs

RX 460:
≈ 2 Tflops
16 CUs

It may not be end all, but this statement tells be that the RX 460 may not be a good buy.

Apparently the prevailing wisdom is that the 460 will actually ship with a very high clock speed. Something around 1.4Ghz. IDK if I believe that but it may be true.

Also rumors that Sapphire has a 480 shipping with a 1.6Ghz clock speed. Probably fake but hot damn if it was real.

That would make it more compelling, and this benchmark that puts it past a GTX 960 would make more sense

AMD cuts the shader units and stream processors from the X cards to the non-X cards. and they tend to perform identically. we saw this with the 280x / 280, 290x / 290, the R9 Fury X / R9 Fury..

it's all rumored.. just take it with a grain of salt.. it's not that serious..

Okay, but those cuts you described are minor cuts, they weren't cut in HALF (The R9 390 is certainly more than 50% as powerful as an R9 390X, more like 90%, even the 380 and 380X wasn't as huge gap). But luckily, the new GPUs are coming out soon, so we will finally get to find out. That RX 470 is hype certainly.

Why do I get that WME vibe....

for less than 100$? I may even go for this one... It will still be a jump from my 270X and it costs next to nothing... And it eats next to no power... And if it can be overclocked - oh man...

OK, Why would i want to go and spend money on XBox if that is true? Are Microsoft that crazy? I mean i am fine with that decision. There isn't any Xbox exclusive that i would like to play, but they are killing their own Xbox division.

They aren't losing because some people like the console experience. If anything they are going to soar prices because the games are widely available.

People will stay on xbox or get a xbox for the "ease of use" trust me, I try to get ppl into pc gaming all I hear is "its to hard and confusing" or "its to much money" no matter how I break it down.

People are lured into that myth of the console and will never wake up tell you can buy a prebuilt pc that looks "cool" (even if the new consoles imo look lame)/small, has a easy to use UI like steam big picture and is sub 300 bucks for the same power a Xbox one with the easy upgrade ability of a pc.

I know many of these things are possible but not all of them at the same time just yet. Plus steam OS and big picture is getting there but not all powerful just yet. Once a company starts making prebuilts that you can plug and play it will win many over. Got to remember a ton of console gamers are "Dude bros" that like to game (only on titles that are socially acceptable to be not nerdy) but think that pc is too "nerdy"

Also, love your TEK Rumors, keep up the good work!

Sad thing is if you so happen to have a laptop with a decent CPU, and a ExpressCard or Thunderbolt 2 (preferably 3, but good luck finding that), you could literally just buy an adapter, the GPU of choice and a PSU for the GPU. I thought about doing that with my Laptop with an Ivy-Bridge CPU (i3 3110M I think) with the ExpressCard slot. And it wouldn't be THAT expensive. TOO MANY OPTIONS I TELL YOU. Wish I has the money to try it all.

uh yes it would lol looking at over 1000 bucks for all of that.

Also even though you and I may think thats easy, the average consumer that gets a console would find it to much work. It would have to be a dock to plop the laptop on that would have a slot in it to upgrade the gpu. Would have to be army proof.. think razers modular pc concept... but simpler.
