Sysadmin Mega Thread

Yeah no worries, I got it installed on my shiney new OEL 8.2 installation, opened up the firewall ports, and are scanning the library now.

Going to figure out how to make it a systemd service and then tweak a bit more then I will make it live on my TV subdomain.

Plex is dead for now :stuck_out_tongue:

My company is leaving CentOS for Arch, thanks to a bunch of stupid changes in el8.

This will be an experience.

oh god why

Because arch is stable, and centos is making a bunch of stupid decisions around Docker, just like what you ran into over the weekend.

We’re running off AMIs anyways, so it’s not like we are gonna deploy an instance and do a pacman -Syyu --noconfirm

It’s just gonna mean we have slightly more validation to do.

Oh yeah Red Hat basically gave Docker the finger.

Why not just switch to Debian?

Because Arch has no security policy so how is that getting by your security team?

Because I have no faith in the Debian leadership’s ability to continue to deliver a stable project.

And Ubuntu has Snap.

The Debian project is a ship without a captain.

I am the security team.

Honestly, I’ve just gone back to install system services because I can tweak them better.

And yeah I agree with the Debian statement.

Ubuntu really becomes the only logical choice after that.

I like what Red Hat is doing with RHEL 8 but I don’t think the Docker -> Podman shift will go over well because of all the tooling build around docker ecosystem.

If I could separate snap from Ubuntu, I’d be 100% with it.

They’re pulling a Sony.

Sir, Everyone’s agreed on a standard.

Our time to shine :smiling_imp:

Oh god Jellyfin is a hungry bitch.

It definitively feels superior but for transcoding subtitles I will need to allocate more resources.

Directly play was fine but its more capable of using what resources its provided.

I think bumping it up to say 8 cores and 4 GiB of RAM will sit well.

Oh, that’s a good initial review.

Yeah it has a lot more knobs to turn for performance. I like it.

oh that’s definitely nice.

Plex wouldn’t use all the resources I have, and I didn’t have any knobs to crank up, which was annoying because the quality would come out kinda crappy.

8 as style(9) intended

Putting this here for later:

What about the lizard?

oh yeah, forgot about SEL.

Though I am liking OEL a lot more because it has a much newer kernel for stuff; which is nice.

For example, OEL uses the 4.14 kernel for ol7 and 5.4 for ol8

Oh yeah, forgot they exist.

Apparently the rest of my team did too.

Zypper is super slow though. Minor niggle I guess.

@SgtAwesomesauce instead of arch you need to come to the dark side :smiling_imp:

Oracle?

Nah, I’d rather gargle lava.

Also, what makes you think we can afford the support licenses forthat?

They can’t even pay me a competitive wage.
