SR-IOV GPU for Compute/Transcode Purposes

I just realized since I use epyc I wont be able to do thunderbolt.

cooler like this one

you have a server chassis so woudnt be an airflow issue

I looked into this, and the only reasonably priced PCIe to MXM adapters that I found are PCIE 1x, which might be pretty crippling for performance.

If you can find other better adapters, great, I just did not find any.

Those combined would be ~$290. Not bad.

that top one is with gpu so $170 + adapter

There are better adapters here:

But $500 is a bit steep IMO.

RIP that price

These are the ones that are cheap but only 1x

Yeah I saw those and I cried a little.

Wouldn’t be a problem for the f@h vm but would that nuke transcode performance?

oof, looks like you would be stuck with Ubuntu 16.04 and kernel 4.4 for the host OS, at least if you wanted to use it with KVM virtual machines.

Damn.

Xen has better support.

Yeah not going to go the xen route.

Exsi also has support…

I just got proxmox up to snuff I’m not reinstalling my entire environment again :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe we need to send one of these to someone who can get the kernel module working on newer kernels.

if it’s not too cumbersome - with all that cabling and the external case - TB cards are usually single-slot

My desired ROMED8-2T mobo has a “Thunderbolt AIC Connector”

afaik, that’s how OEMs / vendors tell you that “it works” …but they didn’t bother to pay Intel for validation / certification / “trademark legalese” …it probably works

I’m constantly amazed by the creativity …there are so many strange / useful / weird PCIe adapters …just look at http://bplus.com.tw

Also, there’s this dude from Germany, who makes / sells (custom) PCIe (bifurcation) adapters / cables: https://peine-braun.net/shop/index.php

…some are quite similar to the ones, used in that fancy rendering server, LinusTech talked about, recently (sorry, i’m unable to find it) …those looked like x16 risers, with 2 x8 OCuLink cables, connected to a x16 “slot-board” (lack of a better term).

Can we please “motivate” mobo OEMs to enrich their UEFI/BIOS/firmware implementation with bifurcation options? (don’t forget to include use cases in your feature requests) :smirk: :+1:

I’ve just plugged in an HD 5970. It only works as a single GPU because only the first GPU can be used. Win10 VM won’t start in Proxmox otherwise.
