Update on issue I am having; I have experienced it on X11 too but it’s so rare compared to Wayland.
Funny finding this while doing my every 2-3 month check if the issues I’ve been having since day1 with the 7900XT have been solved yet. It sure has not, and AMD just has to get their ass off the couch and actually fix this shit.
These vram getting stuck issues are entirely dependent on screen setups.
I do not ever get them when using my main computer with 1x4K60 or 2x4K60, or my secondary computer on 1x1080p60, 2x1080p60, or 3x1080p60.
But whenever I have all three of my 4K60 monitors connected, I am constantly locked at 96 or 456mhz on the GPU vram.
It also happens if I have 1x1080p144 + 2x1080p60 at the same time, but not with just the 1x1080p144.
The way I’ve worked around this issue, is to just every time it happens (which is after boot or after display sleep) run a script that changes the refresh rate on one monitor to 50hz and then back to 60hz 10 seconds later. This unlocks the vram from being stuck at 96/456 until the next time I reboot or my monitors sleep.
So yeah, I just have this in a shell script that I run every time I notice the vram is stuck when I go to play a game:
kscreen-doctor output.DP-3.mode.3840x2160@50
sleep 10
kscreen-doctor output.DP-3.mode.3840x2160@60
