Agreed, used a 1050ti and Ryzen for CS:GO for a bit, can’t fault it (150+ FPS on Max settings 1080p). Don’t imagine Rocket League to be much more intensive.

A newer kernel won’t benefit you much. The r9 280 is GCN gen1 (just like my HD 7850). You would want the older open source radeonsi driver for that card (not amdgpu), if you don’t want to recompile your kernel…
It works great on manjaro and arch, Rocket League is no problem at all for me wit my R5 [email protected].

As for newer cards:
Fiji and Polaris have great open source driver support via the amdgpu driver, because they are GCN gen3 and up. With those cards you will definitely see huge performance gains with newer kernels.
