L1 DisplayPort Cable Testing

Overview

Level1Techs was fortunate enough to buy a TotalPhase Advanced Cable Tester v2. This post is where I will be compiling as many cables as I can test, to make a database of sorts with the knowledge.

Note: Even if a cable passes a test, it could be on the lower end of passing, making it a worse cable than others.

Analysis of Testing (so far)

Exaggeration of Capability

Some of these cables did pass the test, however, if you look at their signal integrity, it is inferior to others that also passed.

For example:

HONGLIN E239426-Z (Click to show/hide)

VS

Pixio

The Honglin cable is obviously superior for signal integrity. However, both passed.

Companies will also rate their cables higher than they should because it not technically being wrong since they can pass this test. This leaves an unknown area of “how good is it, actually?” and that is why this article is being written.

Cable-to-cable Variance

There seems to be variance in cable-to-cable, but a very small margin. The BizLink E164571-KS cable 1 passed, but cable 2 did not. It was a difference in continuity. The variance is somewhat expected, “I just got a bad cable” is common, but some brands focus more on quality control than others. The lack of quality control really shows in these situations where a high stress test is performed.
With more data hopefully we can nail the differences in brands and draw better conclusions.

DATA (still adding)

All of the DisplayPort data I received from my cable testing shenanigans will be displayed here. The ZIP files will be included for your own use and convenience. Message me about any dead links

Reserved for Future Use

This would be an excellent thing to pull into Project_R.

If only I had any idea about how to do that haha… I looked it up, seemed complicated to get the info from the PDF result sheets.

XDDDD No no no. I am working on a major project to document as much as possible about info that end users can’t normally get. Its only starting as a documentation effort tho.

Look at my Laptop Reclaim thread for more information

I’m going to make a hub thread on here soon, but for now I am just trying to find other people who would want to contribute to it. Would you want to be included?

Oh that’s interesting. Sure, I can try to contribute with what I can. I’m not sure how much use I will be LOL but I think the project sounds cool
