Happy birthday! Congrats on not dying for 21 years! It's hard to recommend beer without knowing what you like. I'd suggest buying a bunch of single bottles of different types, if you have a brew shop around that does that, to help you find beers you like in your own.

Also, happy birthday man! Some places are really cool and will give you drinks on the house on your 21st if you go with a group. You bring in business, and it's a sign of good faith that you'll come back. Don't be shy in mentioning it if you do your scouting beforehand.
Alternatively, it being a Monday night, you can wait until later in the week to play that card. Do your research for the weekend and go on a Thursday or Friday night. Just say you're celebrating then because of work/school/whatever. Or maybe people don't do that in Detroit. But hey, worth a shot. You only turn 21 once.

Yeah I took my oldest daughter out for her first drink when she turned 21 ... I bought her a double shot of Bacardi 151 and my wife got her a lemon drop .... it pretty much killed her night lol
