Yup try a bit of everything. I have recently become find of German wheat beers. Good craft pubs can have great selections, ask what the staff like they usually have a wide variety of tastes and good ideas.
Hey, I just started to drink some beer too. I have tried a Belgian Wheat beer called 'Hoegaarden', that was pretty good but pretty pricey

We get that in Adelaide at a place called Belgian Beer Bar. Awesome beer if you can find it and it's not gonna cost and arm and a leg. Then again Australia alcohol tax is just absurd :P so maybe its cheap in the states.
