Just a quick hello from a new fella - HCI researcher and computer science lightweight

hi new friends! long time lurker, newly joined user and all as the internet falls apart. I just wanted to say hi and say how excited I am. I am Nicolai, a 44 year old danish researcher (assistant professor) in computer science, specializing in human computer interaction so you know, those pesky users and all. Recently I have started having a strong interest in using various AI driven tools to make things easier to interact with - sacrilege I know, but I am very keen on the ability of LLMs to not think FOR US but rather to act as a soft fluffy middleware between the hard system and our soft mushy brains.

Feel free to reach out if you care about research in humans interacting with computers <3

Welcome👍

Welcome mate, have a look around. If you are interested in AI related hard and software there are several threads already discussing different topics, but also feel free to open one yourself if you have ideas.

Maybe as a nudge you can have a look over in the following thread were we discuss and try to figure out how to best run medium sized and large models on modest hardware.

thanks! I got a lot of interest in that - I am somewhat convinced that I can get the hardware for that sort of thing up and running relatively easily, so I will look into that. I tend to look into what we can do with this stuff rather than the purely technical parts, so my path would be something along the lines of “getting the model set up as a webservice” → prototyping various tools using it. We have for instance made a small food-recommender system for parents with autistic kids previously and similar, where we used an LLM trained to use an existing database of food ahem experiences. Very cool!
