iGPU pasthrough is notworking

Hello,

I’ve upgrade my homelab and bought a new motherboard with an iGPU. My goal is to use this iGPU to create a mediacenter. It’s not my first try, but I’m not an expert. I followed the advices and tutorials.

In this case, I’ve followed this one (Minisforum BD795i SE Frigate NVR with hardware acceleration) made by @Destari. I’ve got the same motherboard. It doesn’t worked :confused:

The iGPU is working, it is correctly passthrough (at first sight). Do you have an idea ?

from lspci -nn It looks like vfio-pci is attached, but it also didn’t seem to be said, what ‘didn’t work correctly’ from here. Did you attach the pci device to a VM, did it present an error?

If you’re using debian/proxmox & the same HW as Destari it’s worth re-reading all of the post you linked again. (No ill meaning, I spent 30m this evening not whitespacing a dracut conf correctly).

if it can’t detach, consider, to add to your:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet amd_iommu=on iommu=pt"

where you may also need to include some or all of initcall_blacklist=sysfb_init video=efifb:off textonly and then update-grub. Other possibilites may be nofb nomodeset vfio-pci.ids=1002:164e,1002:1640 (check your ids, & yes you have these in a module config but this is right up front, if vfio itself loads early enough)

(notice - if you can’t already control everything remote from here, you’ll need to interrupt grub & edit the command line to remove them, to use locally)

Does it work if you connect a display to the iGPU output? You may need an HDMI dummy device plug.

Thanks for the answers. I’ve already done a complete reinstallation (and create a personal documentation about it ^^). It is the same problem. But, I’ll check again tomorrow.

@GTwannabe : yes, it’s connect to a display.

I’ve checked again, everything is correct.

I’ve also tested your solution @exovert without success. I’ve connected a display and it shows this message when I boot Proxmox, nothing else when I started the VM.

Booting ‘ProxMox VE GNU/Linux’

Loading Linux 6.8.12-11-pve …
Loading initial ramdisk …

Any ideas ?

if its iGPU is being disabled correctly, proxmox itself won’t output anything to the display as soon as it processes its command line. it has a web interface. That’s about what I’d expect the host to show.

Are you attaching the device (which still records Kernel driver in use: vfio-pci) to your VM (05:00.0 I guess, you may also have to attach 05:00.1). Does it give an error when you start the VM.

What is in the iGPU’s IOMMU group
https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PCI_passthrough_via_OVMF#Ensuring_that_the_groups_are_valid

Yes, iGPU and audio device are attached to my VM. This command confirm that drivers are vfio-cpu :

About the IOMMU Group, I’ve found somewhere this command pvesh get /nodes/grosveinard/hardware/pci --pci-class-blacklist "" It gives me a table with each devices and its IOMMU Group. IGpu and audio are on different group (16 en 17).

I’ve tried the script and this is the results :

ok, it looks to be attaching but not initialising inside of the VM.

To double check, on the inside of the VM does lspci -vk show a kernel module attached to it (scan the output for VGA). Do you have firmware packages for the distribution installed (any errors in dmesg for amdgpu, what happens (dmesg) if you modprobe it).

Also, enable serial and/or ssh access, and disable from the configuration the VM’s own SPICE/QXL/VGA so it’s only got the passthrough VGA device. The virtual ones being present can cause issues.

Hello !

I’m already in ssh and the VM config is “none display”. When I boot with a virtual display (VGA), it works (but then it’s not the iGPU ^^)

lspci -k gives me this :

I dont’ know how to interpret dmseg. I’ve done journalctl -b -kand there is some lines in red, but I’m not sure they are linked. The device 05.XX is the number of the iGPU on the host, not the guest.

you need to extract AMDGopDriver.rom and vbios_164E.dat from your UEFI file and at it to your VM.

Place both vbios_164e.dat and AMDGopDriver.rom in a folder of your host and where kvm and libvirt can read, ideally under /usr/share/kvm/vbios/ or /etc/vbios/

Libvirt

<hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x01' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
      </source>
      <rom file='/path/to/vbios_164e.dat'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x01' slot='0x00' function='0x0' multifunction='on'/>
    </hostdev>
    <hostdev mode='subsystem' type='pci' managed='yes'>
      <source>
        <address domain='0x0000' bus='0x00' slot='0x00' function='0x1'/>
      </source>
      <rom file='/path/to/AMDGopDriver.rom'/>
      <address type='pci' domain='0x0000' bus='0x02' slot='0x00' function='0x0'/>
    </hostdev>

Here the vbios from my 7950x, should actually work with your iGPU, if not you have to extract it yourself.

Thanks ! I’ve tried without any success.

I don’t understand how to extract rom and dat nor where to add them in Proxmox config ^^ I’m going to look further and maybe made an new VM.
