Have you looked at Paul Wardingham at all? (yeah... shred so not really weird instruments... but great melodies, technique, and riffs)
Haha cheers! Ill take a look into it. I more meant in terms of lyrical content and whatnot, seen a friend of mine write a masters paper on the lyrics to Aenima and Lateralus. Appreciate it though because I am looking into some more prog metal, normally not my kinda thing but Ill give it a go!
Dan and Insomnium were interesting guesses. I'm writing a paper but I'll certainly check those guys out more. I'm happy to see that someone else knows who Demon Hunter is. Those guys never got the credit they deserved. The Christain rock community is all about Pillar and such.
Their first album especially sounded bland to me at first, and at that point Aegis was my favorite album as well. However, the meat of the creativity is in the lyrics, and they are dark. Once I understood this, I developed a much deeper appreciation of their earlier albums.
Lacrimas Profundere is another band I'm in the process of checking out, but love what I've heard so far. They might be worth a listen. Seems pretty clean for a goth rock band.
Found a gem. Can hardly believe it's the same band
This recommendation may come way out of nowhere, but one of my all time favorite albums. Medea from the Dutch band Ex Libris is a concept album straight out of Greek mythology. The music itself can be described as progressive metal with symphonic elements.
I'd like to make a suggestion.
Korn more specifically their most recent album The Serenity of Suffering. For me this album puts all others to shame.
and Trivium and their album silence in the snow. which I think is a good I need more background music.
I'm glad you've enjoyed what we've suggested! When I first discovered Katatonia I instantly hit obsession and listened to their stuff non-stop for weeks. What albums do you not like so much?
I feel the same way about Woods. Some of their songs feel so different that I don't enjoy them as much, even after forcing myself to listen those songs in particular!
Might I suggest Rotting Christ. Dark and melodic. Start with "A Dead Poem" perhaps.
Replying to this thread again is borderline necro at this point... but I wanted to give a thank you to everyone who has suggested stuff. I've gotten a decent number of bands that I've actually liked and those bands can be used as a springboard to explore others listed as "similar."
Some bands I had already checked out that I am enjoying so far are: Katatonia (good God, thanks to whoever mentioned these great guys!), Agalloch, Ne Obliviscarus, Polyphia, and a few others that are more atmospheric than typical daily drivers (Chon, Pelican, etc).
I've more carefully combed through the suggestions (dating back to the start of the thread) and there's just a few that I'm looking at right now:
- Megaherz (haven't heard much yet, but they are a lot like Eisbrecher and will fit that same specific mood that I listen to Eisbrecher in)
- Amorphis (again, haven't heard much and I'm still iffy about it this one but some of what I've heard so far I am liking)
- EMIGRATE (I don't like this kind of rock... at all... but... there's just something catchy about this band. Even if I don't add them to my library, I think someone I know will... Also, it's the guy from Ramstein??)
- The Foreshadowing (This band is Katatonia levels of thank you to whoever suggested them. So gud!)
Welp, that about sums up the thread so far. I consider the thread "done" or "successful" at this point as I now have 9 new bands I'm listening to (possibly a few more if Megaherz/Amorphis/EMIGRATE grow on me) even if a lot of them weren't specifically what I started the thread over :D
I'll still check out any new stuff anybody links. But at this point I'm no longer actively requesting new posts. Thanks again!
I know you said you are done with recommendations, but I just wanted to toss out a some of my favorites.
I'm not very good with genres, I just listen to things I like the sound of.
