I need some super ridiculously specific metal music

@MetalizeYourBrain A lot of what you suggested I'm liking, so there's that!

@b3ans I've listened to most of Woods of Ypres by now; there's about a whole album I don't care for, then a good 50% of the remaining stuff I like well enough, then another 20% that's just... alksdjf;lasdjflsa. ie. Kish My Ashes Goodbye or Shards of Love or I Was Buried... so gud

Katatonia's first album I don't care for at all, but the second has three songs I like, the 3rd album five songs I like, the 4th album I like entirely except just 2 songs... and the rest of their albums I haven't heard yet. But, if this trend holds, I'll love their newest stuff!

@HimTortons Nah, Windir I don't like. But Finntroll... this is... very bizzare. It's like a darker version of Pirate Metal. When listened to in the same spirit that is needed to appreciate Pirate Metal, I can appreciate Finntroll lol

Judas Priest is popular? Retirement Home Metal:)

So, German Industrial Rock/Metal?

Try Emigrate (bandproject from Richard Kruspe, one of the guitarists from Rammstein).

And since you like Eisbrecher, Megaherz might be of intererst for you.

Not perfect, but still metal as fuck.

No lyrics, just awesomeness.

Woods of Ypres - I Was Buried In Mt Pleasant Cemetary song reminds me of Type 'O Negative somewhat...

I've been tripping on this lately

Also recommended: The Quantum Hack Code. Super tight story tho'.

sounds like you need something without words. and expand off of that.

enjoy or don't.

You know what, I'm going to pull up my pants as much as I can, pull out my walking stick and I'm going to put on some Metallica lol

My first thought too.

After I put my false teeth on the table and headbang to one of the best drummers ever:)

I need to find new Goodwill stores to shop at because I picked the ones I go to dry of anything good.

Interesting that you nixed Kamelot, from your description they were the first to come to mind (Kahn years anyway, the last couple albums have been fairly week, though I don't get much of what you mention in the Black Halo and Poetry for the Poisoned albums. What you describes sounds more like several other power metal bands though). This is going to be a tough one to pinpoint, as you said. I'll see if I can cover at least a few bases.

Have you tried Iron Maiden? And I don't mean "the Number of the Beast" (the album is fine, but it's far from the best they have to offer, even if it's the best known)

Symphony X, if you don't mind the symphonic prog that's fairly ambitious (what prog isn't?), especially The Odyssey and Paradise Lost.

Aldious (thinking of the female vocals you like and some other aspects). Their a bit hard to find full versions of their songs, but here's one that seems up your ally: https://vimeo.com/29329850. Usually, I would recommend Spirit Black as the introduction to this band, which is a bit heavier/thrashier (to a degree), but I think this is closer to what you describe, and they have more songs in either direction (softer, slower, fast, harder, etc) of this.

Along with Luca Turilli's Rhapsody, there's also Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire (there's some significant changes over the years, especially since the split, so might want to try a sampling from their 3 different eras: Emerald Sword Saga, Dark Secret Saga, and whatever they are doing now).
Easy ones to find from each ear: Rain of a Thousand Flames, Unholy Warcry, Dark Wings of Steel

Ancient Bards also does a pretty interesting multi-album concept power metal thing, in a way somewhat similar to Rhapsody, but the story ends up being a bit darker I think (gives a few turns and ups and downs for that). I'd say, if you didn't care for the high male vocals in Rhapsody, you might like the female vocals instead here, along with the layers, complexity and movements of a few of the later songs like Showdown (which is kinda the climax of the whole story thus far, so if you care about that I wouldn't start there, otherwise it's a great song to get a taste of range).

At a very different side of things, have you tried much Doom metal? And not the death/doom, but just straight doom metal? Many bands at least hit a few of the points you mention.

At the moment I don't have enough time to browse any more suggestions than those I have already tried (as it is I haven't been on this thread for 17 days...). I'm currently swamped with classwork while trying to publish more videos and work on concept art at the same time. It hasn't been too fun. BUT! I'll be coming back to this thread in about 2-3 days and updating what I've tried/liked/didn't like in case anyone has more suggestions.

Hey guys, sorry I fell off the edge of the world in this thread. Classes and personal projects both demanding so much time leaves me with little spare time, which is almost always thrown right at video games.

Most of the stuff I've already given a yay, nah, or maybe towards so you can look through my previous comments if you need more examples of what I do or don't like. So far, here's what I have absolutely loved so far from what you've suggested:

  1. Katatonia. A few of their albums I don't like at all, but some of them have instantly become personal favorites even compared to my previous library. Songs like "For My Demons" and "The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here" are 2 examples of what I absolutely love out of this band.
  2. Ne Obliviscarus. They're a bit repetitive, but are really great when I want something clean, upbeat, yet hard.
  3. Polyphia. Not something I would have stumbled upon or given a chance unless it was recommended. I really like the clean melodies and upbeat tempos. It's kind of atmospheric in a way.
  4. Woods of Ypres. A lot of their music I am not really excited about, but they have a particular style that just comes together awesomely in a few songs, such as "Don't Open the Wounds" and "Kish My Ashes Goodbye"

As for the stuff that I gave a "maybe" response to, I simply haven't had the time to listen to it. But hopefully my liking these bands will spark similarities with others. When I can (probably later in the week) I'll check back for any new suggestions and dig through the stuff I said "maybe" to. Thanks guys!

Some stuff I think you may like, I'll start it off light

Overall I think that alot of people see TesseracT's second album (the one the above track is taken from) as a master piece, not too heavy, but alot of complexity to their songs, if you dont like Resist look at some of the other stuff on the album like Calabi-Yau or Nocturne.

And now onto a little bit heavier, but dont worry im keeping the vocals light, as in there are none at all in this guys stuff.

this entire album is solid fucking gold. Starts off strong and keeps the momentum going and then finishes off nice and easy with The Air at Midnight. This is what I recommend to alot of people who love metal but dont like the screaming/growling, but also like Melodic.

And from here on im just going to be spit balling to see what sticks

Like I said im just spitballing here so I mean the worst you can say is that you dont like it , its just the stuff that I thought may or may not fit your criteria, and some of the songs are kind of on the edge or over it in terms of what you are looking for. but hey, its worth a try

happy listenings.

Hey man my tip for you if it is not mentioned already is to try Tool. Songs like Forty Six and 2, and Lateralus. This is as complicated as it gets. Sometimes takes a while to get into but i highly recommend it, Im addicted to it.

No kidding about mixed signals. With Theatre of Tragedy, I'm surprised you'd think their early stuff was boring, but like their 3rd album. Of their "good" albums (the first 3), I find Aegis the least interesting. I mean Cassandra is one of my all time favorite songs, but as whole albums, I think the first two had more value in regards of dark and artistic, particularly Velvet Darkness They Fear. Maybe too much growling for your taste?

You may want to check out their Rose For The Dead EP. It might be a mixed bag, but I'm curious as to what you'd think of the self-titled track "A Rose For The Dead", "As The Shadows Dance", and their cover of Joy Division's "Decades".
I also really love the tracks "And When He Falleth" as well as "As Black As The Devil Painteth" but I don't care for the remixes included in the EP, so I'd recommend checking out the original album versions of those.

A band that I'm not too familiar with, but I've absolutely loved what I heard so far is Todesbonden. If I had to describe what I've heard from them it would like world folk music with gothic/symphinc twist, or maybe vise versa? Anyway the tracks I'm digging are "Battle of Kadesh" and "Fading Empire":

I'm also curious as to what you think of The Sins of Thy Beloved. I love everything by them, but from their Lake of Sorrow album, I'd recomend their self-titled track and everything after (tracks 4 - 7)

@jammy

  1. Tesseract - "meh." There's nothing that I outright dislike about them, I actually like the clean vocalist in fact. But it just doesn't... click
  2. Dan Dankmeyer - I typically don't like djent and the first song had me expecting to not like it. I skipped around to the other songs for a bit and it's different from most djent I've heard. I'd have to give this a full, start to finish listen to really know if I'd download it but it's a start. So far it seems like a djent version of Polyphia, so I might like this very well.
  3. Insomnium - oh, this is... different. I like how there's an apparent rhyme and reason to the flow of the songs and the mixes of hard and clean vocals is done well.
  4. Wintersun - Someone already suggested this. It's too "heroic" for my taste. Hope that makes sense, I don't know how else to explain it.
  5. Dethklok - Hey, ugh, Skwisgaar, ugh, you might wanna check, ugh... you sound a little flat. What's dat? You sound a little flat. What, what's dat? You sound a little flat. What's dat? He won'ts admits it. Ohz, it's outs of tunes?
  6. Demon Hunter - fucking hell, DH? I'm not the only who knows about these guys?? I was really into these guys when I was younger. Most of their stuff I don't listen to actually, but there's about three songs per album on average that I have kept in my library. My Throat is an Open Grave, Blood in the Tears, Our Faces Fall Apart, Deteriorate, and The Tide Began to Rise I just absolutely love. Granted, only one of those songs are even heavy. I've always said DH is a band that's better at melody than they are ferocity. Their really heavy stuff I find cringeworthy, tbh, but their lighter stuff like what I listed.... ugh, that is some mastery.
  7. Machina - nope. Ironically, it's the vocals that are throwing me off so much. The guitars/drums I strangely like, but I have no idea what kind of singing would go well with it (for my tastes).

@Finnigan For some reason Tool seems like one of those bands that "everyone" knows about and suggests yet I've never listened to them. I've listened to some of their 10,000 Days album just now. I like this.

@jerm1027 "Theatre of Tragedy comment about mixed signals" Really? That's interesting, I thought ToT would have been the best example I could mention to explain my tastes. Truth is, I haven't listened to their first 2 albums in so long I only have a shadow of a memory of them. I just remember the impressions "more of the same" and "growling" from their first two. The EP you linked I have heard a little bit from before, but I had forgotten about it and I don't know why I never got it when I got Aegis. Thanks for reminding me it exists.

Todesbonden - Hmm. I really like some of their instrumental work. Don't really care much for the vocalist. Although my sis would go crazy for it I think. She has this thing for the Romanian chick in that video with the Russian opera singer Vitas, if you know what I'm talking about.

The Sins of Thy Beloves - ahahaha... I was wondering when someone would mention these guys. I could remember their style but couldn't remember their name so I never brought them up in my initial post. My thoughts... are conflicted. I haven't heard them for years and I never really sat down to give them a proper listen to. I only had those first, conflicting impressions that I didn't sort through. Now that I know the name again, I can do so.

I'll just leave this here :P
