Holiday Gift Ideas

We're working on a gift guide, of sorts. What better time of year to embrace your inner consumer?

We're working on a sort-of-maybe gift guide for our community. If you're looking for a last minute gift for any of your particularly-persnickety-hard-to-buy-for friends, we think you'll like what you see here.

Who doesn't know someone that identifies as an attack helicopter in this day and age?

We are going to post a video soon with many of these items. We'll post it at the top of this thread when we do, BUT we wanted to create this thread because we figure our community can share lots of neat things from every corner of the internet.

SO What sorts of gifts are you giving, or expecting, this holiday season?

Reply and link here. Here's our random list in no particular order:

Even beyond our list, http://www.thinkgeek.com/ is often an "easy button" for this type of thing, though stuff there can be pricey.

... and don't forget, if your wallet is deep enough, some artists are willing to work on commission "Scenes from movies in a bottle" for example http://shipinbottles.com/jaws-scene.html

Happy Hunting Everyone!

p.s. we're sending youtube and social whatever to this thread so everyone post cool stuff you've got in the past, or are planning to get for others?!? thanks much :)

Steam gift cards, and more steam gift cards. Lol. Also, the credit card gift cards as well if you just want to give someone money because you aren't sure what they like.
Also, things like (insert-name-of-new-movies/videogames) always are good.

Who knows for my dad, probably flannels

Everyone else hallmark cards lol

For myself, what I want besides a new computer/laptop is this, or really any book, made by folio society.

One can not have too many raspberry pi's those just always work.

I have found the raspberry pis less than awesome for 'set it and forget it' operation. I will admit I haven't mastered the hardware watchdog, maybe, but the fat32 boot whatever seems to be a weakness because, on a long enough time scale, something happens to them that requires manual intervention. But for $35 can't be beat I suppose.

First post on Level1Techs, Yay!
This is something I strongly recommend. I bought these for myself last Christmas

These are called the Roland CS-10EM
These are binaural microphones by Roland (can also function as earphones (not recommended- not their primary purpose)). The Microphones record pretty good audio for the price.

The cheapest price I found is on ebay. (Note that I have no financial initiaive on this whatsoever, it is just a great product)

So, you actually record exactly what you listen, from your perspective. I personally think having binaural earphones in your ears is actually much more practical than having something like a 3dio free space.

You could do ASMR with this (although, somebody else would have to whisper into your ear for that n.b. it is awkward)

I have recorded friends' convos and university lectures with this. If you are into concerts and stuff, you could "relive the moment" with these. Also, since Smartphone headphone jacks can't easily be repurposed to record 2 channel audio, I recommend buying a cheap recorder with mic input if you want portability of recording. (or you could do it with a laptop)

Here are a few recordings that I did to test this thing with my friends.

This one is a pretty Canadian conversation

Edit: Make sure you listen to the recordings at a high volume. (This is pure, unmodified audio I recorded on my PC)

If you're cheap like me and like to buy gifts that seem more expensive than they really are, you can spend $5 on the shockingly good Venture Electronics Monk Plus earbuds, or you can spend, like $8 on a 10ft micro-USB cable from Anker off of Amazon (in RED too!).

If you want to spend a little more, buy DVDs of good classic movies you know they don't have (i.e. The Iron Giant). Mugs are also a good option, I picked up a cool looking fox mug from Starbucks with a gift card I had laying around and the handle is a fox tail, it's kind of great.

Tea is another good one if the person likes tea. I also bought two friends different cassette tapes containing vaporwave off of bandcamp, so if you know they have a cassette player that's a pretty fun and unexpected thing.

Above all though, if you actually care at all about a good gift for someone, write a handwritten note about whatever to go with your gift. Those are kind of the best thing to find with a present.

@wendell You guys should do a community ideas follow up

Give the gift of GOG!!!

with some cool new games

Or cool Old games

Or just be cheap and get them some free games!

Joking aside, i like to gift my friends with slippers and a vibrator...
If they don't like the slippers they can love themselves...
I hope nobody ask for video or pictures of that...
PS: I am a disgusting human being...
