Gigabyte X570 Aorus Elite IOMMU groups?

So in the Ryzen 3700x/3900x review wendell mentions that the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Master has quite good IOMMU separation, does anyone have any information about the lower end Aorus Elite motherboard? It seems like they should be similar since it’s the same line of motherboards but I can’t find any information about it.

Also need to know that. Planing to upgrade to an Aorus Elite with a GTX 960 for the Arch Linux host on the second slot and a RX 5700 XT for the Win10 guest. Also, can anyone confirm that I can use a GPU on the second slot (with 4 Lanes) as the main GPU on a Gigabyte board?

Gigabyte Support just answered.

“The setup of IOMMU-groups is defined through the source code of AMD’s chipset.”
(german orig.:“Die Einrichtung der IOMMU-Gruppen wird durch den Quellcode des AMD-Chipsatzes bestimmt.”)

Which probably allows us to assume that if there’s one X570 motherboard having IOMMU groups for every device, every X570 board got it.

Oh? That’s good. I was trying to decide between the elite and pro (but it seems no one carries the non-wifi so I was leaning towards elite).

The first slot should be tied to the CPU most of the time I think, and using the CPU slot for passthru is preferred I remember reading somewhere. Though that may be mostly because of IOMMU groups. So here’s hoping it does work. In theory it should but I hear ya on wanting confirmation.

That said though a guy in another thread is having trouble getting any GPU working in his second slot… so… yeah. Hopefully he works it out or it is just a bad board. Well, not that I wish that on him, but you know… Or that it’s something to do with his ASRock board and not the X570 itself.

I think I’ll go with the X570 Aorus Pro then. That thing got both PCIe 16x slots directly connected to the CPU (2x 8 Lanes in a dual-GPU case) instead of having the second being connected to the chipset (with 16 Lanes for the first GPU). Costs 60€ more, but sounds like less problems. And since PCIe 4.0 x8 technically is the same speed as PCIe 3.0 x16 there shouldn’t be that huge performance penalties in the near future.

True enough. Hmmm. Not you got me leaning back towards the Pro. Thanks :stuck_out_tongue: Kidding.

Got the system up and running now. Can confirm there are separate IOMMU groups for every device. Even most of the X570 Aorus Pro’s onboard devices have their own groups, there are 22 groups for me in total using 2 GPUs. AMD even split the GPU and HDMI Audio in case you’re using a 5700 XT, which is kinda overkill.

Also, the X570 Aorus Pro allows you to use the GPU in the second slot as standard graphical output. Neat. :+1:

Thanks for sharing your experience with the X570 Aorus Pro motherboard.

Any news on the IOMMU grouping and support for booting from the 2nd GPU slot on the X570 Aorus Elite?

The Pro is 25 % more expensive than the Elite, which is why I’d opt for the Elite, provided it comes with the same kind of IOMMU grouping and 2nd GPU boot support, of course.

I’m currently running the Gigabyte Aurus Elite for my passthrough. I can confirm that the bios has the option to use the 2nd pcie slot as boot gpu. As for the iommu groupings, this depends on the bios version. The latest ABBA breaks the iommu groups for me so I went back to the ABB. (f4 on the gigabyte website).
With ABB the groups are very nicely grouped:

Excellent, that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for, thank you so much for sharing those details!

I keep seeing reports about various issues with the X570 Aorus Elite (CMOS being reset on boot, very long boot times, memory training problems etc.), have you had any issues with yours?

BTW, what kind of RAM are you using?

I think you can enable iommu and pcieacs and get same layout on Abba ?

Try it?

I do remember having some issues with the bios resetting when I had upgraded my pc to this mb+3700x. But I haven’t had those issues since. I think upgrading to the f4 bios at the time fixed the resetting but I’m not sure on that. The bios boot times are quite long. For me it takes about 23s to get to grub. (Same time with fastboot enabled)

As for memory im running a corsair vengance 2x16 kit at 3000mhz (CMU32GX4M2A2666C16) without issues.

Hey Wendell,
Thanks for the suggestion.

So I did find the setting “enable ACS” in the bios after flashing back to the f5b (ABBA) but enabling this setting (iommu also being enabled) still gives me the bad iommu groups. It did say in the bios that “AER must be enabled for ACS to work”. I’m guessing this means Advanced Error Reporting. As far as I can see its enabled in my kernel (5.1 from manjaro) and can’t find anything in the bios ressembling AER. Any ideas?

Perhaps you could try enabling “PCIe ARI support” (it’s supposed to be somewhere under Settings -> AMD CBS)?

Sadly no luck. Still end up with the limited groups when enabling ARI support.

Does using the pcie_acs_override=downstream,multifunction boot options do anything?

I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful, I don’t have the actual hardware in question (yet), so I’m just trying to think of solutions to similar issues I’ve encountered while gathering info on the X570 Aorus Elite.

No worries , I think I’ll be just staying on f4 (ABB) for now and will check the upcoming bios updates from gigabyte. I kinda think that acs is just broken in gigabytes (f5) ABBA bios.

Hmm yes. This did fix the group for me on the aorus master but that was the first f7 with Abba not the current one.

Full iommu isolation creates problems and there are still bugs around Nvidia/whea so iommu had to be gimped or Nvidia users in some scenarios will experience issues

Oh wait, did you set pcie ARI to disabled? Disabled should be by default now. I believe.

pcie ARI is indeed off by default for me at both f4 and f5. I tried enabling it with most combinations of disable/enabled/auto for “iommu” and “acs enable”. All resulting in the same limited iommu groups.

Confusion Monologue

Just checked the bios for the Aorus Master and I see that the naming scheme is offset there. Nice. f7 for the Master is f5 for the Elite. That explains my confusion. Thought I somehow missed a new update.
