At the start of next year I want to build a really strong gaming pc. So far this is what I plan on using. I want to know what you guys think about it and if I should add or replace anything. And not mentioned here is a 1TB HDD that I plan on using from my old computer for storage.
1000w is too much, you could probably do with like 600-700 or so. 16GB of RAM is high, so think about getting 8 since it doesn't really matter in gaming. Sabertooth is nice, take a look at the Maximus V Formula, not a great deal, but a beautiful board. Nice case, have you seen the Phantom 820?
Very nice build, but if your throughing that much cash, i7? Also consider www.NCIX.com (www.us.ncix.com in the US), they're nice, and good prices.
You do, only nead an i5, and i7 wont do much for, only some computational bonuses (less zip time etc.). The only reason I said that was because of how much money you were puting into the system anyways, might increase the value of the whole rig, but that may not matter to you.
As for the power supply, take a look at www.pcpartpicker.com to check out the wattage, and put your rig in one place. My rig is almost the same as that one, and I am using about 500w. For SLI/Crossfire, imagine this: your at about 500w too, if you want an additional card on this power supply (I think you need another of the same card though), you will probably be about 800w under load. So an 850w, good brand power supply is what you need. (other forums agree with this).
But make sure you are going to use SLI on this rig, if not you can save a bit on the supply, and save some power with efficiency. If you are just going to use it on a different rig, buy it then, they will only get more effiecient.
that looks like a nice build but i have a few suggestions.
first off, the case is... unecesary i think is the best word. it costs 300 dollars. my suggestion for a case would be the Apevia X-Trooper. it is a mid-tower but has a metric shit-ton of room, looks gorgeous, comes with 5 fans(4x120mm 1x200mm side window). and only costs $89. the only thing that i do not like on it is that it has no USB 3.0 headers, but you can just use the back and save the $200.
The CPU: i would suggest taking some of the $200 you save from the case and throwing it towards an i7 3770k. you will never have to overclock it and will save having to get an aftermarket cooling system.
RAM: love G.skill Ripjaws. but you may want to get 4 4GB sticks. having it in more sticks makes it a little bit faster, not a huge amount, but enough to consider it.
The PSU: 1050w? again, just unnecesary. in my rig i crossfire and i have a 750w with no issues at all. if you plan to sli more in the future try going with an 800 or 850w. no point in spending the extra cash to have useless power flowing through your PSU.
The GPU: 680's are great. and one will do just fine, but if you want to ramp it up a notch, go with a less fancy case and PSU, take that money, get a second 660ti or 670 or whatever you want and SLI. you will blow damn near any game out of the water at top quality. maybe even witcher 2.
The RAM is ok, but not very good on an intel system, its both above 1600 (ok with XMP) and at 1.6v which is a no-no.
Thats the same way I feel about my case and mobo (the ones I linked above) I just fell in love with them.
About SLI, you wont need that much power, at least for a few months/years. On most games, unless you are planing on playing Crysis 3 on max graphics, you just wont need it. I would get one 680 or 7970 (Never Settle) and upgrade later if you need it. Or just upgrade the whole rig when Broadwell (two intel gens) comes out.
The RAM is ok, but i got two orders of the ripjaws X 8GB (2x4GB) at 1866, 2133 is faster, but check if it is compatable with your motherboard, it may only go to 1866. i would get a cheaper case personally, but that is because i fell in love with the X-Trooper so i know how you feel there, but the $200 may be worth it to you i do not know.
1. Gtx 680 is slower then a 7970 by a little bit. A 7970 is a bit cheaper as well. Still a strong card, so if you like it w/e.
2. You can get much better SSD's for that price. A samsung 840, Corsair Nuetron, Kingston 3K. All better choices, and usually cheaper.
3. Dont make someone else think a case is a bad investment, if you like it and plan on using for a few builds then buy it. You have to use, and look at it. So get what works and what you want.
4. Maximus 5 is a better mobo, but is a tad pricer. That mobo for this build will work and look good.
5. Yes a HX850W or even a AX850 will give you plenty of wattage for this build (with room for future expansion)
6. For gaming, its the best bang for buck intel offers. Great proccessor.
7. 16Gb for gaming is not neccessary at all. Get 8GB corsair, muskin, kingston or crucial ram. 1600mhz at 1.5v, with XMP profiling and thats all you need.
8. Great sound card. If you dont want to spend that money, you can get a lower end Xonar card with a headphone amp, and for games you wont notice a difference.
Only addition I would make is adding a CPU cooler. I would research, but a noctua D14 would work great with that case I believe.
really? you would add a cpu cooler? that processor or an i7 should not exceed the bounds of the default fan if you do not overclock, which you really should not do anyway.
you may want to get a second order of that, if you are running a server like on minecraft or any other game you could need more for a decent FPS in game, also if you get more then you will be able to run other applications like browsers or anything like that without experiencing any lag, the whole thing will run smoother. but if you do not plan to host servers then there is no real need for more than 8GB
