Do we talk about jailbreaking iOS devices here?

Do we talk about jailbreaking iOS devices here?

I’m pretty sure my ipad is way to old to do anything with… I don’t know the first steps of jailbreaking it…

Is this a forbidden topic?

To the best of my knowledge… It’s not banned, but if you are ever unsure I recommend checking here(Rules) or messaging a moderator.

For jailbreaking would probably need more details, but Tarurine is the best place to start. So I’d go here: Device Selection (iPad) | iOS Guide

Check the rules for what is not allowed, but basically don’t talk about doing anything illegal in your jurisdiction and don’t talk about pirating or breaking encyption. And don’t post magic numbers.

Maybe dont post links to the thing that jailbreaks, but I guess you can name it.

This is likely in a grey area of ethics and morals especially if the ipad is effectively EOLed already.

But then again I am not a mod. OP can maybe @ one of them?

Dopamine works. I have an older iDevice semi-liberated with this resource.

I miss redsn0w days…

How is it morally or ethically grey to repair or extend the functionality and life of the computer I own?

For example:

If I buy an iPhone, and Jailbreak it.
And I buy a gameboy and a pokemon.
Then dump my (legally purchased and owned) ROM, and play on my (legally purchased and owned) iDevice, then there is no violation of copyright or IP. No piracy has occurred.

I do not need apple’s or nintendo’s permission to run an emulator on iOS on the computer I own.

Even nintendo finally admitted emulation is legal: Nintendo just admitted that emulators are, technically, legal - Android Authority

See also nintendo vs gameshark. I can mod my pokemon too, and give myself 99x masterballs.

I played a lot of pokemon Emerald on a jailbroken iOS back in the day. (and yes I owned the gameboy and the game too).

I doubt anybody would consider it ethically grey exactly but potentially just desirable to not attract legal bullshit from apple.

Why would anyone want o modify iOS? It is perfect just the way it is! Wanting to change it, is like blaming Apple for dropped calls, when your just holding the phone wrong.

Just because it’s perfect for someone, it may not be for someone else. (I.e. I would love to sideload apps but don’t care about Jailbreaking)

sarcasm./joke… I thought the last statement made that apparent. I run a pixel with a customer launcher. Wanting customization is why my phone has always been android and Apple only considered for laptops and tablets. My previous employment with an AASP required me to be more familiar with the ecosystem than i wanted to be.

sorry - I have heard literally those statements unironically

This is why I haven’t posted any token rates or info on the NVIDIA mining cards i am running with hacked drivers for Ollama in windows server 2022. I Don’t want to bring any heat here. I run an IT business and small tech channel out of an Amish cabin, run mining cards for AI, doing things outside of the mfgs intention is kind of my thing. I fully support using something you bought, for whatever you want.

Doe this look super sketchy? I have an iPad Mini 2 (super duper old… doesn’t show up on your list)

I mean it does seem sketchy, but typically anything with exploits is sketchy. Its a risk vs reward thing, and If its a device that would otherwise be wasted, i’d give it a shot.

Although id use a PC I could wipe immediately or a VM to download and run the exploits.

Apple has never gone after anyone for jailbreaking: iOS jailbreaking - Wikipedia

While Apple technically does not support jailbreaking as a violation of its EULA, jailbreaking communities have generally not been legally threatened by Apple. At least two prominent jailbreakers have been given positions at Apple, albeit in at least one case a temporary one.[134][135] Apple has also regularly credited jailbreak developers with detecting security holes in iOS release notes.[136]

edit: this is not legal advice

Fully untethered with Cydia + Winterboad was awesome back in the day.

Now with mostly Semi-untethered and still not having full root, iOS is useless as a platform. Restricted to the point where it is not fun anymore.

Apple has removed the general purpose from general purpose computer.

You own your GPU. Not nvidia.

I own my iPhone. Not apple.

Also just a warning, sometimes USB passthrough can be finicky on VM’s with the device rebooting sometimes multiple times after putting in DFU mode and all that.

The file claims to be checkrain, but from a random youtubers drive link? I would say no thanks, personally…

Check the official checkra1n website: https://checkra.in/

What version of iOS?

It is the iOS 12.5.7 this sketchy YT requires… basically the last one accessible on the old tablet.

I was thinking the official checkra.in didn’t handle this ipad (as in it was to old) … but looking better at it now maybe it does.

It says 12+

Stay away from the YT link, stay on official.
