This is my problem: I have lost functions in Windows and I'm not able to fix the thing! Basically, Windows Update is gone, all restore points are gone, explorer.exe is messed up, I can't access certain programs, Settings is gone, I can't save documents in Open Office, just to name some of them. The system is still functional (using it now) but none of the fixes MS have suggested have worked.
I've tried using sfc & dism and they can't fix the problems. Reset finds an error and won't work. Repair won't work, tried so much stuff and nothing seems to work. I was going to just do a clean install but it say it can't because the SSD has the partitions formatted MBR and requires GPT. Microsoft said I was wrong.
As for my system, it was my first build & many of you here helped with it (thanks to you all), and this is what I have: AMD 8320FX, 32G G-Skill Ram 2400, Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z MB, Sapphire 290x Tri-x 8G GPU, Samsung 840 Pro 256G SSD, WD Blue 1T HDD, Seasonic 760w full modular Plat. PSU, Thermaltake V71 case w/ 3 cougar 120 fans, Rosewill multi-card reader, Asus Blu-ray DVD, all with OEM Windows 7 Home Premimum (now upgraded to 10).
Well this is a strange occurrence, but I suggest getting your system to boot into safemode with networking. How to get to this is click start, type msconfig and hit enter, when the box pops up, go to the boot tab, and at the bottom check safeboot and check networking and restart your machine. Then once in safemode, download Tron Computer Tool. https://bmrf.org/repos/tron/
***You are running Tron at your own risk and I am not responsible for any damage done to your machine**
Run tron and see if it fixes any of your issues. Make sure you're connected to the internet and keep a check on it periodically. With a SSD, it shouldn't take to terribly long for Tron to run. Unless you have a lot of issues, then it could take awhile. You'll need to keep a check on it because you'll need to update and run Malwarebytes manually. Once Tron is done, the box will be green. You can then restart your machine and see if your machine is fixed. Inside the tron folder, there are more instructions to do other things. You can also run some manual tools, which are in the manual tools folder.
I tried it and it didn't fix anything. It actually made a few things worse! Also, now my system boots to a black and white screen asking to choose between booting into normal windows or in safe mode!
It also deleted some files that were legit! I know you were trying to help but I STRONGLY suggest you don't ever tell someone to use that Tron setup.
If I can't fix what that screwed up I'll have no other choice than to reformat this drive and start over.
I have not use either of those, but I used the software that came with the drive and used chkdsk. Nothing came up wrong.
I have tried to re-install, but it encounters a problem and stops. I was going to do a clean install but it says the drive is formatted in MBR and that Windows 10 requires GPT. I'm trying to avoid reformatting, but it might be the only thing to do.
Can you tell me what "Legit" things tron removed? Because I've never had a single issue of it removing anything legit in the past 6 months of me using it. I have had it remove cracked keys for things such as Windows, Photoshop, and Office before. But obviously that will happen as tron is set to remove anything that isn't supposed to be there. Exactly why I told you to run it at your own risk.
Also you say you're computer is running Windows 10, but when you replied to me you say it boots up and ask's you if you want to boot normally or into safemode. That doesn't happen on Windows 10. So what's the deal there?? Are you on Windows 10 or Windows 7??
USB, inside Windows, DVD. When done from w/in Windows, it downloads, verifies, starts the 'cleaning up' phase then give the 'encountered and error' message and stops. If I try to restore the image, the system can't find it on either the DVD or USB.
If you install Windows 10 via USB it should reformat the drive with the correct partition format (GPT) before installing the OS. Are you saying that it will not install this way?
I stopped when it came to the point where it stated the format was wrong. I didn't try to reformat. Yes, Windows 10 is activated. I did so when I upgraded back in September.
Right now my system boots into "Boot Manager" every time! This happened after I used Tron as suggested by AnthonyofSCT; who, btw, hasn't replied yet. Makes me wonder why?
I would really like to fix this rather than do a reformat.
you may be able to fix it with chkdsk /r in CMD prompt if that doesn't work your other option is to use a linux live cd to create a backup system image then format the drive.
I only did a external back-up of 7 before I upgraded. Got lazy about not doing it for 10 but I've moved all the essential stuff to another drive. I guess I'll do the re-install this weekend if nothing else happens.
I'm using the system now. BTW, I initially said I tried sfc but it can't fix the errors. So far no suggestions have helped out... well, I haven't tried to reformat & start over thing. I'm trying to avoid doing that but it looks like I might have to after all.
