Hello,
I’m in need of finally upgrading an old simple 2-port DisplayPort KVM to something better, and I’d like to invest in something that will last for as long as possible, and wondering if there’s any plans to release a KVM that supports DP2.0 or newer?
The 4-port HDMI 2.1 KVM would probably suit my needs, but I’d rather not get an HDMI KVM if I could avoid it.
Given that it is still in development, it is probably the right time to ask to include some RS232 or TTL-UART control port just like you did on HDMI KVM.
I don’t know what is the management protocol for current HDMI switch, so I might be saying obvious and already existing things, but ideally, it should be possible to fully control all functional aspects of the switch via that port. Some command to query current status would be useful too, so that controlling device could fully replicate the front panel.
Can’t wait … because everything on the market I have tried so far sucks. Most are just USB switcher when it comes to keyboard and mouse. While my newest monitor is only DP 1.4 right now (HDMI 2.1 which my 4070 won’t recognize correctly, MacBook Pro M1 doesn’t detect anything after working for a few days), if I spend $500 or more it needs to be future proof for a while.
Any updates on this? Running an Odyssey Neo G9 and having to switch between HDMI and Displayport inputs via the OSD control is getting old. :take-my-money:
I have an Odyssey G9 57" as well, and it only has a single DP 2.1 port. The other 3 ports are HDMI 2.0 / 2.1. This means my 2nd and 3rd computers have no choice but to be connected via HDMI.
The issues with that are:
MacBook Pro HDMI 2.1 Support
a. HDMI 2.1 requires use of a dedicated port. It doesn’t work over TB4, understandably, due to bandwidth constraints.
b. Apple decided not to add HDMI 2.1 support to their TB5 chipsets for some other reason, and no combination of adapters (including HDMI 2.1 to DP 2.0) will produce a full resolution image, even at reduced refresh rate. So this means at least 1 more year of dependency on the dedicated port.
The dedicated HDMI ports on MacBook Pro are incredibly flaky.
a. It can take up to 10 replugs before the display presents at its full resolution.
b. The port will disconnect with the slightest jostle.
Computer sleep (or any other Software disconnect) will results in the resolution of the display lowering to 5120x1440 60hz max, and will not return to full resolution without a system restart, no matter how many times the display is power cycled and reconnected. This even seems to happen if the display is not connected at the time of sleep (such as taking the laptop mobile, and returning to plug it back in later; full restart required)
Note: The above points remain consistent across all generations of MacBook Pro, from M1 Max to M4 Max.
I’ve been living with this hell of my own making for about a year now, and long for a KVM that supports DisplayPort 2.1. Or an equivalent display with more than 1 DisplayPort port. Or a MacBook Pro with HDMI 2.1 support via Thunderbolt 5. Whichever comes first. I would pay a fortune to have things “just work” again.
I’m reaching out to see if anyone has recommendations for a reliable DisplayPort switch. Here’s my setup:
Monitor LG 38GL950 3840x1600 175hz
• Devices: I have three devices— a Mac Mini, a work laptop, and a gaming PC.
The gaming PC is connected through a CalDigit T3 Thunderbolt 3 Dock with corning TB3 cable connected to my Rack.
• Peripherals: I Have a keychron keyboard and mouse with the option to switch between three devices.
• Current Issue: My current switch only works about 20% of the time and reset to 60hz, mess up my resolution, give me black screens, which is incredibly frustrating.
I’m considering a good quality DisplayPort 1.4 or preferably a 2.1 switch to facilitate seamless switching between these devices. I will soon get a monitor with 2.1 DP and higher resolution so a DP 2.1 would be awesome. I feel that a KVM switch might be overkill for my needs, as I already have my peripherals sorted out.
Has anyone found a reliable DP switch that supports multiple devices without frequent issues? Any specific brands or models that you could recommend would be greatly appreciated!
the “full bandwidth” chipsets for dp2.1 leave a lot to be desired right now. I can do 4k/480hz all day long with compression, but the eye diagrams for UHBR/all 80 gigabit really don’t look very clean. Yet. We’re working on it. We’ve come a LONG way the last 6 months though.
I’m also very interested in this, as my LG 38GN95B won’t run through my existing DP1.4 KVM (from a competitor) at 144Hz. I made a profile just to follow this issue.
If we’re asking for features, I’d like to have keyboard shortcut functionality and a wireable button and/or remote.
I’m pretty excited for this. My new monitor needs dp2.1, and I’m going to start leak testing the cooling loop on my new desktop tonight (5090 baby!). My l1techs dp1.4 kvm has served me very well these past years (except on the work macbooks, but it’s not your fault crapple can’t properly implement dp1.4). But a good dp2.1 kvm is the last missing piece for my new uber setup. So, count me first in line to say “shut up and take my money!”
Hah, I have gone from “shut up and take my money!” to “What’s your blood type, I’ll trade you a kidney.” I have this ridiculously overpowered new desktop, and I can connect it to the monitor via the l1techs dp1.4 kvm, but Wayland and/or Nvidia driver refuses to let me use anything below 60hz no matter what I do, which is way out of spec for the kvm, so the kvm crashes after a few minutes, and wayland with it, and I have to reboot to get display back for another few minutes. And my dp2.1 cables are all 3 feet, which doesn’t give me enough length to get to the dp input on the monitor, so I’ve ordered a new 6 foot cable, but in the meantime, I have this behemoth of a box with a watercooled 5090 that is only usable via ssh!
Awaiting updates on this with the patience of a hungry angry baby. I’m certain it will be worth the wait, though!
Oh, I can testify to that, works great at that res/refresh (on anything but a macbook, of course), this monitor is 7860x2160 though, and the kvm gets angry at anything above 30hz. I’ll try it with hdr and async disabled later, probably will help. A man can dream, though. A man can dream…
