AMD Radeon 7000 series discussion

Not entirely surprising given that they’re pushing data over a die-die interconnect within the package.

However where it will supposedly win is manufacturing yield and economy of scale (and hopefully that means price).

It has a weird power consumption with multimonitor and idle is a tad bit higher but at gaming, it consumes less power and has better efficiency than what team green has to offer.

As usual driver on launch is sh*t.

Inventory lasted about 3-4 minutes on Newegg, and AMD’s store is using a queuing system with a lottery element (random place in the queue) but overall the stock lasted longer than the last few launches. Except the 4080, of course.

EposVox did that and it’s trading blows in AV1. Unfortunately the H264 encoder is still behind both Intel and Nvidia.

The fabric clock I honestly think is still too low. Matching previous gen latency performance over the substrate honestly is gaining nothing in terms of internal latency. Higher clocks would overall increase performance and latency, and lower latency might help with RT performance too. Currently the performance gain is mostly the improved occlusion culling.

Forgive my ignorance, but isn’t H.265 better in every way compared to H.264 except for maybe playback? I feel that AMD is going with a similar approach to how Intel said eff DX9 and DX11 because DX12 and Vulkan’s emulation of those is good enough. Spend the money and time on the new hotness.

yea I watched the Eposvox video, but I want to see this working in Linux

I hope the DP ratio is still 1:16, for a long time consumer AMD have been good for traditional compute partially because of this ratio and having good memory bandwidth. The Aida64 results from here might show that the ratio has reduced to 1:32, but it’s probably a bad result as the memory bandwidth is also suspicious: https://babeltechreviews.com/hellhound-rx-7900-xtx-vs-rtx-4080-50-games-vr/6/

H264 is still the only ingest video format for livestreams accepted by Twitch. EposVox goes on about how AMD’s H264 encoding is still quite behind at lower bitrates.

Hence, in almost all reviews AMD wins by performance per dollar in this gen

That’s a long-standing issue for AMD gpus. No priority and resources to tackle on this frontier yet it seems.

That’s not called “better efficiency” but lower power consumption. The wording is important here.

The reason 7000 series is lower power consumption because it is less performant at its design power budget. When you limit 4000 series to the same performance level of 7000 series, Nvidia cards will consume less power than AMD counterparts.

Forget about H264, no way AMD will be coming back. Simply because no AMD investment will go into it.

The future is H265 where AMD already invested in and developed decent quality on par with Nvidia and Intel.

You know what I think you are right. I watched Linus’ take half asleep as I woke up. I have to look into it again.

Im torn between getting Team Red or Green. Open Source friendly or more environment friendly. I want to go and say fuck it and buy Intel but they’re not available locally.

I have gone team red… I have been talking about it for 3 gens now and im in… I’m now all AMD.
I cant afford any of the current nvidia current gen offerings here in AUS… i could stretch to afford the 7900xt.
If i can get 5 years out of it ill be happy.

I am not happy with the current state of Nvidia scalping of consumers, it irked me back for the 20 series how much harder it was going to be to upgrade and it has only gotten worse.

Apparently the cards aren’t performing as fast as AMD thought they could’ve? Hearing something about a “hardware bug” (which RDNA3+ will correct for), unless I’m really offbase.

Are there any sources on these bug(s)? The only place where I heard about them is recent 7900XTX MLID video. But I don’t trust this information.

came back into stock fast

I feel envious of people in the US. Sometimes you dont feel how lucky you are compared to others. I mean I get it, you live in a sh*t country but there are a lot of other worse countries out there like where I am now and stuff still aint available locally.

I’ll probably get mine sometime this Feb.

I havent checked MS in a while and for 7xxx until just now. Under a 5000 and a 4500 WS card this is the top price and availability at my local.
XT partner card for dead on 899.99 and tax.

Im shocked I tell you.

I hope they get the power draw issues sorted out shortly

Anyone know if updating the firmware on the gpu is “a thing” in linux?

I think it took about a year for the 6000 series for idle to drop to 7W

AFAIK the firmware is typically loaded from file at boot, I think there’s a way to update the device itself but I don’t know if it’ll be used in the presence of firmware files in /lib/firmware/

Someone more knowledgeable will have more knowledge :stuck_out_tongue:

All I know is, my XFX RX 7900 XTX will have the most Xs.
