I have been looking everywhere online for short CAT 5 cable. I don’t know alot about networking but bought a switch for my 4 consoles and I would like to avoid using really long cables. So I was wondering what my options are since 1 foot cabling doesn’t seem to exist.
Honestly, with those prices of today.. I can't recommend that. It's more hassle to figure out you messed up one wire in the cable when you look for why the traffic drops when the bandwidth peaks... and so on. Buy them premade has become the goto solution.
Ugh, that testing device makes me cringe. It only says totally broken or conductive. But a bad contact (at the crimped jack) still can conduct good enough for the LED to shine but cause various troubles with high frequencies.
And to be honest... cabling does cost nothing today compared to 20 years back...
Cat6 has higher quality outer casing and a piece of plastic in the center of the cable to protect the individual wires from each other. You know how on an old radio you sometimes hear another radio station for a second? cat6 protects the wires from doing that to each other which for a standard user cat6 is probably a waste of money but I don't really care. Gimme the good stuff!
You should try it then you have new skill for your CV :)
I've done hundreds of cables at work in the classrooms and server room I look after. I don't even think about the possibility of a marginal connections the chance is so low. You just cut the sleeve, spread the wires (the only real fiddly bit), give them a good shove into the "glass" connector and a firm squeeze on the crimping too.
Well then people are getting a repacked product and paying for stuff that they aren't getting. I haven't had to buy any Ethernet cable(s) in a while so unless something came out in the last year or so I don't know what you are even saying.
