ISSUE:

Anytime I plug in a device (Samsung phone or Oculus Quest) into the Type-C USB 3.1 GEN2 port -in the Back of PC - All USB Hubs in Device Manager crash (go away)

No USB Ports are available when this crash happens. Lose USB Mouse / Keyboard on every port.

I have literally spent HUNDREDS of hours over the few months trying to resolve this.

(This used to work a year ago. I remember testing link speeds on all ports/cables for Oculus Quest VR.)
No telling what has changed since then.

I would really like to use my Type-C 3.1 Gen 2 connector on motherboard again. (Trying to get MAX Gbps for my Quest 3)…

Original Device Name: Intel Cannon Lake-H/S - PCI Express Root Port #17 [B0] Hardware ID: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_A340&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_F0

WHAT I HAVE TRIED:

Nothing worked…

Defaulted Bios Setting on my Gigabit Z390 Aurora WiFi Pro mother board (Bios Rev12)

I turned off allow to turn off device under Power tab for every device under USB Controllers in DM.

Downgrading eXtensible driver from 2025 to 2024

searching for any missing drivers

Physically unplugging EVERY USB device on the computer and only plugged in the Type-C on motherboard (USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller, to be sure it wasn’t voltage overdraw.

This is what the USB Controllers looks like before plugging type-c into motherboard.

After wards, you can see it crashes all other Hubs and nothing plugged in works.

I believe this is related to one of these 3 left over;

Generic USB Hub

USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller

USB Root Hub (3.0)

Since they are left over after USB crash

What I have learned:

If device is still plugged into 3.1 type C Gen 2 on back – USB Hubs will not detect.

TIPS:

Tip# 1 – NOTE: Install a Remove Desktop app and autostart before remove USB devices in DM. If you are having this issue, Bluetooth pair your mouse / keyboard if possible or use a Remote Desktop app (Team Viewer) to use cursor/keyboard when it crashes.

I found that if you uninstall eXtensible Host Controller , I also lost Bluetooth functionality. So Remote Desktop is one of the few options to manage device after doing this.

Tip# 2 -Removing the 3 leftover USB Controllers and re-detecting bring back the other USB ports, thus the keyboard./ mouse.
