Yserver - modern X11 server written in Rust

Now the Wayland-dislikers may have a new option: yserver

Seems that they are trying to support the imporant/relevant stuff from Xorg, but now with a modern codebase written in Rust. A pretty neat project.

Curious if anyone has tried it and what the experience has been like so far.

Sorry, couldn’t help myself.

I don’t believe this is using yserver, does it?

They did implement X11 support via a compatibility layer, sort of like Xwayland, in their Orbital display server around last year though. But that’s a different thing.

Lol, y not. :joy:

Personally, I think it’s cool that someone decided to work on something epic like this, even if I might not use it myself.

There’s also someone building a new X11 server in Zig, out of all the things: phoenix - A modern X server written from scratch

No, I don’t think so, but it could…

The work is progressing on both ends.

Have you switched to Xlibre yet?

I see. Well, I’m mostly curious about yserver for this thread.

Off topic but, personally, I don’t have a use for Xlibre. But there is a thread about it here if you’re curious about it: Is Xlibre really that bad?
