You will have to excuse my venting here, but I need to complain

I guess this is where I will put this,

OK, so I am a bit grumpy at the moment.
I am doing a CISCO course through my university over here in Australia.
I just follow the CISCO stuff, its a well laid out course IMO but anyway,
I was annoyed when a student ask a question about a subnet mask,
the guy was like “I calculated it, and you’re incorrect see” all in decimal,
Now, my understanding of this, well I hear mask, we’re OR-ing.

You guys might be able to teach me something here, there is also a shift?
This is just a bit shift to any channel, this is not hard stuff. But the kid
was missing the whole point, like look at it in a bit-wise manner,

And the entire answer to the question was this: (2^x)-2

Technically correct, but Joeys calculators still going to to him its wrong if we’re looking at a different subnet.
He got a fish, for a moment, the “teacher” felt smart for a moment and
I left unhappy with that situation. Joeys not dumb, very smart actually,
just wasn’t aware of the context.

So, last night we also had to fill out this form to “grade” the teacher,
the school does it a lot, normally when they’re in trouble (uni << $$$)
so I took the chance to send the teacher an email, tell her I think she’s a
good teacher, maybe talk to the school about advising students it’s not going to be a cake walk. I also said, “it would be nice if that question was explained better.”

So, my day did get worse. The question wasn’t explained any better and a couple of other students had given their interpretations, so I felt I had to say something about it and proceeded to fall straight into the lecturers textbox.

I didn’t try to, actually, I was fairly confused for a bit. I have had a quick look (not long at all, I have a HEAP of respect for you Javascript guys, just keep doing it PLEASE) a few weeks ago, Well it is what is I guess. It has gone down just a couple of orders of magnitude in the last few years

It shits me off a bit, falling through the API in the room you learn network security. That’s my vent for the day. If you got through this, I know it wasn’t about networking much.

Also, I’m not saying at all I understand that subnet stuff, I looked at it from first principles and knew it was not the correct approach. Thanks for listening.
