Yet another YouTube alternative post

We are nearing the end of 2024 and the winds of change have yet to arrive.
YouTube is a great platform but with some very obvious flaws.

So I-am asking, are there in 2024 any YouTube alternatives that actually show promise?
And I-am asking this question NOT FOCUSSED ON POLITICS.

So completely leaving politics out of the equation. What are viable / growing YouTube alternatives.
I’ve opened odyssee and frankly got scared because it’s seemingly only conspiracy and American politics.
Whils’t I-am just looking for car stuff, restoring old crap, physics lessons and stuff like that.

Searching for this online yields no results, just random lists and answers tied to politics and censorship (ord atleast 5 year old results).

Depending on spare cash and content-preference, Nebula is good.

Everything is US politics these days. The only way to not have US politics and social issues is to start with German, which will promptly result in German politics and social issues

I use GitHub - tubearchivist/tubearchivist: Your self hosted YouTube media server to download the channels I watch, but it’s just a question of time till yt-dl is broken / unusable.

I’m also thinking about subscribing to nebula, but I don’t think that all content creators I watch will ever be on nebula.

Well for me it isn’t. I-am not from the USA.

Not sure what you mean with “start with german”.
I understand german, but that seems like a small audience.

Also it’s not that there’s not politics on the platform, just that it’s not focussing on just politics.
So can there be a platform (with free speech) that’s not focussed on politics.

Nebula does seem promising, atleast it has mostly normal content on the (explore) front-page.
Even ‘practical engineering’

Would you know more about their growth strategy or if its catching on?

Take a look at Playeur (formerly Utreon).

However, the problem with any alternative video platform is getting a critical mass of people on it. People watch content creators on YT because that’s where the creators are, and creators publish on YT because that’s where the viewers are.

That’s very true.
I guess I-am searching for the next biggest ‘critical mass of people’ and not another way to watch youtube.

Besides my own business I-am thinking about uploading video’s (not even to make money) but would Like to use a different streaming platform as well, to help the masses move away from youtube.
And just using the next tryhard platform would seem like a waste of effort.

Yup, and that’s why I suggested Playeur. Back when they were still branded as Utreon, one of the content creators I follow had some interviews with the CEO of the company and they had some good plans for the future (some they didn’t discuss openly so they wouldn’t get stolen). However, they’ve been stuck at the point where (as far as I know) they’re staying afloat, but not big enough yet to implement some of those plans.

I hope those plans involve a UX/UI specialist.
Looks like an old drupal installation.
What am I supposed to see?

And it’s way to focussed on being French (i suppose).
Not really an international approach.

I think Those are some older international film festival videos that they’ve been promoting for a while. Don’t remember the specifics.

As for the UI, guess it’s a difference in taste as I like their simple design. Though, admittedly I don’t interact with it much as the creators I follow I do so via RSS feeds.

Pretty much all of the “alternatives” are going to be filled with the kinds of content youtube suppresses or outright censors, because censorship has been the only driving force large enough to motivate a serious effort to provide an alternative. A huge chunk of that is political or political-adjacent. Below that we have the attempts at “better” monetization that, because of that goal, are going to remain small and pretty niche without the ability to absorb massive losses like google can or attract the critical mass of viewers and creators.

Youtube is so dominant this is not going to change without it completely imploding.

“Gray Jay” by FUTO is an option.

It is an app that works as a video aggregator and allows you to watch videos from many different platforms, and also allows you to “subscribe/follow” them no matter what platform they are on, without needing to make an account for said platform. They don’t store, or sell your data, so it’s privacy focused too, which is nice.

The app requests a one-time payment of $10, but you can still use the app without paying since they have an indefinite trial period.

The problem I have with Gray Jay is that it’s a phone app. If one’s primary method of content consumption is via their phone (which admittedly is a sizeable majority these days), then it’s fine. However, if one doesn’t consume media on their phone due the the lack of extra privacy controls, it’s not as helpful.

Though, it’s probably worth checking out for those that it would work for.

The main reason the “average” person ever tries to look away from YouTube is because of certain politics being repressed, so that ends up resulting in most of the other platforms being mostly about politics.

Nebula seems to be the only one I ever hear about as a legit alternative, and it is trying to be more engineering, scientific, and project focused which is of course a nice thing, as the majority of what I use YT for is those things and tech.

Odysee is not great for discovery, actually none of the alternatives are, but if you know what you want to watch and curate it yourself, it’s pretty good. It is great for uploading now since I think they don’t require those tokens anymore.

I deleted my yt accounts some years ago and odysee is where I will upload my videos, if I ever make any again. I don’t care about discoverability since I only want to upload videos to share links to on chats or forums anyway.
I don’t have experience of bitchute but it seemed like a decent platform to just upload your videos as well. Might make an account if I decide to go back to making gaming videos again.

For watching content I still use yt, kind of, but the days are probably numbered how long that is going to be possible. Lot of the creators I follow are thankfully on other platforms too so if yt goes down for people like me, I don’t think I will miss it.
