So I've always wanted to play Battlefield 3. Thinking it was simply a must-have, and I was aching to play it before it was ever possible since I never had a PC capable of comfortably gaming. Now I've finally started playing the game. Played for a good 6 hours. And at this point. I really wish I could get my money back by how fucking abysmal this game is. I've played Battlefield 1942 back in its glory days, and I am just SHOCKED that these are the same developers. BF Vietnam I also got into during the glory days. Vietnam isn't a popular war, so naturally, neither was the game. But it still had the same mechanics. I have a long history with the Battlefield games, but yeah.
Anyway, on to Battlefield 3. I just really feel that I need to vent on this game's shittyness because of how excited I was to play it. I thought to myself that there's NO WAY this game could be back AT ALL! I thought I'd be logging in HOURS upon HOURS. The screen, and the HUD is FUCKING SATURATED with information, and information that could EASILY be distilled to a far greater extent while letting you know exactly what's going on. Objectives A, B, C, D, etc. Showing you Objective A, followed by text: Closet where the janitor usually drops off his mop right next to the vending machine. Instead of simply showing "A", or "A - Mountain Range", as it SOMETIMES IS.
The Minimap, and spotting. The minimap has got to be polluted with the most amount of information on the smallest fucking area I've ever seen. And to top it off, players are so reliant on the minimap and the minimap provides WAY TOO MUCH INFORMATION for its own good. The last time I checked, in a first person shooter, you had to use YOUR FUCKING EYES to spot things. Not have 90% of the shit handed to you in the form of a red diamond marked on the map, or on the screen. I'm getting killed left, right and centre by what's basically a bukkake session of fucking GUNFIRE!
You can never get a breather, and when you do, it's usually not fun... it's not stimulating playing a game where you're wandering around, hoping to find a proper engagement with the enemy.
And finally, the SHOCKING, INSANE level of pretentiousness and LACK OF PURPOSE in the rather deep weapon customization and weapon functionality. This is a game where people are not only playing infantry, but also in vehicles. MANY vehicles. So it brings me to the question: Why in the FLYING FUCK is there such an extensive list of modifications and ability to modify your weapons so thoroughly, coupled with the need to unlock them that is equally as steep? In Call of Duty, a game I HATE, it at least A: Made SENSE, B: WORKED, and C: Did I say it made sense? In Call of Duty, you would have a steady level of progress in weapon usage to unlock attachments. BF3's weapon customization to a LOGICAL (keep that in mind, 'logical') mind would register the notion of: You would have substantial progress in unlocking weapons per each match. And this weapon customization would OBVIOUSLY have some level of purpose to it. Well, the simple fact is: it doesn't! It FUCKING DOESN'T! It makes ZERO sense. WHY would you implement such a detailed weapon customization system when this isn't the kind of game that exclusively makes use of infantry/on-foot combat? I could see myself unlocking an entire set of attachments for one gun, maybe by the end of this summer? Holy fucking Christ! Battlefield had taken the signature traits of Call of Duty, and has actually managed to give them no purpose in life. NONE! NOTHING. That's like Counter Strike having a goddam team member healing system in the form of a fucking Suture Kit which requires 3 minutes for it to complete. Meanwhile, the bomb at A is ticking down to the last few seconds and your entire team is dead. BRILLIANT! No, no. That TOTALLY makes sense. That's the meaning of logic, folks. And at least if each required amount of kills per attachment was significantly reduced to a fraction, I would probably not complain. But at the end of the day, these are all observations and facts.
I AM PERPLEXED by the fact that the Creativity Cancer known as GIMMICKERY has affected Battlefield now. WOW! Just, WOW!
If anyone can perhaps enlighten me and inform me of the painfully incorrect way I'm playing the game, I'd appreciate it. Because so far, this game looks like it was put together with absolutely 0 consideration for the interconnectedness of almost all ideas/game mechanics.
GG.
