Wondering about the new macbook air

better in maybe boost time, other then that air is a newer refresh

I was speccing the storage to 512 and ram to 16.

pro you can do ram upgrade your self for cheaper, air is soldered so yeah you need 16gb at purchase

I think itā€™s solderedā€¦

it is, everything is on the air (even storage)

No I mean on all the Mac laptops for a while.

even the pros? WOW that is sad (the mini isnā€™t still)

The touchbar ones definitely.

The mini might be a pretty solid PS machine, especially if network storage is in the picture.

Wonder if new air is going to have the keyboard issue like the not current gen pro keyboards

Mini still has soldered storage, guess not a big deal assuming network storage but that would piss me off to no end. I could deal with ram soldered if I had to on a laptop, but storage is just so stupid imo

So @SirTeddy it would work, but would be painful for AE. If you are dead set on a moible apple device the 15" pro would be your best bet performance wise or the 13" with touchbar since it has a quad core. A better option might be the new mac mini if you are able to have a desktop.

Things to be aware of RAM and Storage are soldered on all devices minus the new mini that only has storage soldered.

I think the main thing is that the AIr is just not designed to do production work. The thermal solution, power delivery, etc is all going to be designed around battery life, so when the CPU pegs while youā€™re rendering or brushing or whatever, itā€™s going to choke down to 1.6ghz and youā€™re going to be spending a lot of time staring at it while it catches up.

That would be less the case on any Pro model, even with identical spec on paper.

Wonder how much longer 13" woudl boost is it really that much thicker?

Donā€™t know for sure, but I have a last-gen air in front of me, and they say they shaved considerable volume off it. Thatā€™s pretty damn tight. Itā€™s already considerably thinner than the pro in that it tapers. Thereā€™s also the fan curve, and power delivery which Iā€™m speculating about, but it would make sense that theyā€™d engineer it around light use.

I remember having to wait longer for the 16gb or was it 8gb air that my wife got since it was not the standard ram it took a lot longer for them to get it in stock at the apple store (pretty sure it was 8gb since i think it was like a 2013)

It was 8. 16 is a new config. I have a stock, minimum spec one that I use to go do IT stuff onsite and itā€™s fantastic for that. Battery is excellent and it can take some abuse. The only issue I have is I sometimes fill up the 128gb drive.

Funny thing is I got her an xps 15 but she cant use it at work so its kind of a waste as her desktop is pretty much parity (5820k with 970)

Iā€™m considering a new air to replace my 2015 13" pro (mainly for thunderbolt 3, new battery).

I suspect in this form factor/thermal envelope, 2 vs 4 cores is a bit of a wash.

  • if you go two cores they can run higher clocks for longer
  • If you go 4 cores you can run more threads at lower clock.

I very much suspect that if you were to go say 4 cores, you would NOT get 2x the performance. At least not for any significant time period, due to the clock dropping.

But yeah, if you want a 4 core, you get a 13" Retina with touch bar

Thanks, I ll choose mbp :+1:
