Wireless KB/M combo thru a wall

I got a computer in one room and a TV in another. Sorted out the HDMI cable.

Been using a phone app thru the wifi, and an old wireless mouse that is having reception issues.

I want to get a wireless kb/m for easier control. But it needs to be able to jump a wall, and given the mouse’s trouble, I might need some advice. Distance is only like 3m, except there’s a wall in the way.

If anyone uses/knows models that definitely work thru a wall, or has another idea, please share.

Moonlight (but needs an nvidia gpu)

3m and 1 wall should generally not be a (huge) problem, except maybe if there is metal between your receiver and mouse/keyboard. Or if it’s a super cheep junk mouse.

If your receiver is plugged in the back of the case, there is a lot of grounded steel to go trough. Same as if there is wiring in the wall, or some sort of support steel structure. Plug your receiver with USB extension and experiment with positioning.
Check the battery in the mouse too.

Also, what’s your use case? Media player, games, desktop, all of the above?

Media and light browsing.

I game on my desk only.

Actually, the PC faces away from the wall in question and oddly enough, when I plug the crappy mouse receiver in the front, I get a better signal than when plugging in the back, where it supposedly doesn’t have to go thru the PC chassis.
Altho it is surrounded by a lot more cables in the back. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don’t know what’s in the wall tho.

I was looking at this thing: https://www.cherry-world.com/dw-5100
Which is on promo for super cheap in a nearby store and has the media keys at the bottom, which will be really convenient for the use case.

@regulareel I am not sure what Moonlight is supposed to solve here. Tho it is nice.

Hey if it’s a nearby store, worst case scenario you can return it?
But yeah, from the spec 10m range with 2,4GHz is probably the best you can expect from any general purpose set. And pick up USB extension cable, maybe a meter or two in any direction can help avoid wiring or some other interference.

Well, I guess I can’t pick it up today, cuz apparently they don’t have it at the store, only in their warehouse.

I can order it and see if it works, then get a USB extension if needed. I have a bookshelf above the PC, away from any electronics where I can park the receiver end if need be.

Altho, now that I think about it, I remember a friend where I saw this weird KB with a built-in mousepad on the side, so that might also be worth looking into. Or was it a trackpad…?

I’m still looking for a good one, and still nothing… I hope to give Lenovo one a try some day, but can’t find it in stock for reasonable price anywhere.

If you managed to get a HDMI cable through the wall, I am sure getting a long USB extension cable through the wall is possible, too.

That’ll bring the kb/m receiver into the right room.

Problem solved.

Actually, it’s not thru the wall. I run it around, thru the door when I want to watch stuff on the TV.

Which is just as well, cuz I don’t want a screen attached, that I can’t see, when using the PC.

I ended up doing those 2 things.

Got the set yesterday, and the KB worked well enough, but the mouse was having troubles again.

I found some shitty old 1m-ish usb extension cable in a drawer in my desk and getting it away from all the metal of the case seems to be enough to make both work consistently.
