Windows detected a hard disk problem

Good Afternoon

 

my windows 8 pc has this nice pop up saying "windows detected a hard disk problem".  I know how to disable the message, but I am looking for any suggestions for a program to check the disk.  It has to be free as I dont get payed tell next week, and I cannot risk loosing all my data between those times.  I would also welcome any other thoughts on the matter.

First, make sure you have backups already of the really important stuff. The drive could easily get worse if it is indeed starting to have problems.

Then download Seagate's SeaTools for Windows, it works with any brand of drive:

How about any PC hardware scanners that are Bootable?
