Thanks for the advice, he's cloning it now.
So instead of simply creating one more partition and moving his data there, he's dead set to move partitions around, boot from USB drive and resize existing system partition?
Where I'm from, we have a saying for such cases, which roughly translates as "Monsieur is greatly experienced in perversions". 
It is a cross i must bear.
I have also given him the 'Clean Install' speech, and pointed out that it would almost certainly be quicker and work better.
