Will I see a FPS boost in games?

So im going to upgrade me cpu ram and mobo this upcoming black friday and I would like to know if I am going to get any real fps jump. Im currently running 4gb ddr2 ram and a amd athlon 64 x2 4000+ and im going to upgrade to 8gb ddr3 and a fx 6350. The reason i'm asking this is because I have heard on many occasions logan say that upgrading the gpu is when you see all of the fps jumps. So I would like to know if im going to see any jumps upgrading these parts. I was planning on upgrading my radeon hd 4550 first but my current motherboard wouldn't be able to hold a bigger gpu so I have to upgrade the mobo first. So to sum up will I see a difference between a athlon 64 and radeon 4550 build and a fx and radeon 4550 build? If this thread could be in a better place by all means move it :)

You will need to upgrade your motherboard at the same time that you upgrade the processor, as the socket AM2 board that you currently have will not be able to use a socket AM3+ processor. To be honest though, you really should upgrade all of it, GPU included, because a Radeon HD 4550 is a little saddening. Take a look at this:

You may be able to find certain parts for a cheaper price around Black friday, if you can find DDR3 RAM at a cheaper price for an amount that you are comfortable with, then buy that instead.

Ya I know im going to have to upgrade the cpu mobo and ram all at once..... thats why I said I was going to upgrade them. All I want to know is if I will see any FPS boost at all? Even 1 more frame. The video card will be replaced soon after the cpu.

Sorry, for some reason I didn't see that you were planning on upgrading the motherboard as well. Probably because you abbreviated it to mobo... In that case, yes, on many games you will see a boost in performance, especially if it is one that allows you to offload the PhysX computations to the CPU.

Grab an apu setup and ditch your cpu, ram, mb and gpu (its too old to be of any gaming use). Sell it even and put it towards the new parts.  A cheap apu & motherboard combo with some fast ram will be light years ahead of your current setup, will be cheap and you can enjoy some good quality gaming while you save up for a better psu and gpu (or cheap one for hybrid xfire).

amd 5800k + midrange A75 board that supports fast ram + fastest ram you can afford = around the $200 mark.

That may have been true about 8 months ago before the price of fast RAM skyrocketed again. It's still a viable option, however you must be aware of the fact that an APU powered system does reach a performance cap a lot sooner than one of AMD's CPUs without internal graphics. If you are planning only to upgrade it to a certain point, or you are comfortable only playing games at low to medium prices at 1080p, then an APU powered system is fine, I guess.

No ill be getting a 7970 sometime in the spring when I start roofing again. So im not trying to take the easy and cheap way out and get a apu. That having been said will a fx 6350 work good with a 7970 or one of the new r9 series cards?

it should work well with a FX 6350. Feel free to buy whatever you want at the time though, but remember that an R9 280x is just a rebadged Radeon HD 7970 GHz ed.

Alright thanks everyone. My questions are thoroughly satisfied and answered.

I reccomend you upgrade the graphics card and ram before anthing else.  You will recieve more fps for the time being, and even more when you get a cpu that will not bottleneck something like an r9 280x or 270x
