so my monitor states that it can pass 144hz at 1440p acording to specs by benq. now i try a DV Dual link cable and i can only get 60hz. any idea whats up with that? as i want to test my monitor as it flickers and gets static screen tearing after logging into widnows or until i unplug and replug the display port cable from my 1080 to my pc.
I found this which hopefully is accurate:
http://www.avadirect.com/blog/displayport-vs-hdmi-vs-dvi-vs-vga/
The passage in question:
"The DVI, or Digital Visual Interface, connection is starting to die out,
although it is still on every graphics card. The video signal is
basically the same as HDMI, just without the audio. However DVI in newer graphic cards will transmit audio when connected with a DVI to HDMI cable or adapter. Single-link cables and hardware support up to only 1,920×1,200 resolution, but dual-link DVI supports 2560×1600. DVI is capable of 144hz refresh rates, so it’s a good choice if you have a 1080p 144hz monitor. This is especially true for gamers who have an FPS that is higher than 60. If you want 4K, though, you’ll need to go with DisplayPort or HDMI. Just like the other cables can be adapted to DVI, DVI can be adapted to VGA with a passive adapter."
Hope this helps (and I hope is accurate... someone will correct me if I'm wrong).
Perhaps my monitor like other things i tend to buy expensive is dying on me fml.
What monitor do you have?
My ASUS VG248QE did the same thing when I mistakenly connected it using a single link DVI cable.
In your case, I would try using a Display Port cable instead.
Displayport is best for 1440p at 144hz, I'm not too confident that DVI can actually provide sufficient bandwidth for that. I know that 1080p 144hz is pushing the limit for DVI, so I would really recommend using displayport as it does offer significantly higher bandwidth. Beside's that, you can try to set the monitor refresh rate higher in the windows control panel if it even offers you the option.
ill have to buy one as i don't trust the one i have since i have to unplug it over and over on boot to remove this static / line / tearing im getting
yea thats what ive read, hmm
Be sure to get a good one. I've had lots of DisplayPort cables that were trash. The free ones I've received and some cheap ones have simply not worked to spec and, as a result, caused major problems. If you're in the US you can still get high quality DisplayPort cables for ~$10-15 on Amazon so you don't have to spend that much money to get a good one. Just don't waste your money on cheap crap.
dvi-d supports 144Hz, ensure your gpu has dvi-d connector. Sometimes it needs to be enabled from driver or from 2nd bios.
If you have multiple dvi ports on your gpu, only 1 of them may have dvi-d. (also cable has to be dvi-d)

i have a gtx 1080 so i might try the Dvi d cable i own
1080 doesn't support dvi-d anymore. dvi-i might be able to get you to 144Hz but your monitor may not like it. Try regardless with dvi-d cable.
