Politics was banned, so the otherwise mildly annoying ratfight that was Windows vs Linux has become just another arena for hyper-partisan bollocks as people focus their antagonisic juices elsewhere. it was always fairly petty, but people need that confirmation bias.

These always end the same way…install linux, windows is spying on you, all this encrypted traffic contains no personal data and my personal fave of i am tired of ms screwing me over once a month or more

If you are using a wifi, simply mark the wifi networks as metered! MS won’t download anything over metered connection.
Also, and since I hate Windows too, just use GNU/Linux! 
You’ve completely dodged the ethical issue at hand-- Micro$oft doesn’t get to decide what’s good for me, nor does it own my computer (it’s ridiculous EULA notwithstanding). All this nonsense about a “safer computer” is merely corporate euphemism for “let us push surveillance up your ass, and take more control away from you”. My computer, my rules.
