I don't understand why i hear that a lot lately.  Now a days you have to have much more talent than ever to become a successful musician.  Sure a lot of shit is coming out, but there was a lot of shit during the 90's, and during the 80's, and so forth.  Someone like Jimmy Page or Eddie Van Halen couldn't keep up with the slew of talented guitarists coming out now.  At least in the Metal community, music is just getting insane with the talent out there.  Even with sub genres like Screamo or Hardcore which i can't stand, they have some insane talent.

Pop music is pop music, and should never deserve any credit that they attain.  Pop music doesn't have longevity and will never be signed in Hall of Fame ceremonies or any life achievements because it's fluff, no substance, and horrid work.  That stuff has been terrible since day one so that can't be regarded.

The problem with modern music is that now a days you have to seriously search for good stuff.  The shit is given more attention and the stuff with substance and talent is in the back of the common listener.  Good music is an enthusiast thing.  The comparison can be related in analogy to a computer enthusiast.  A modern user won't understand what's good or bad, but an enthusiast will always understand what parts not to buy and what brands to look into.

Childish Gambino and Kendrick Lamar are some of the first rappers that got me to appreciate rap for a VERY long time.  Some intelligent lyrics, good stuff, and in general i can't stand rap, but i'll make an exception for those two.

+infinity...... that is amazing

Check out the other rappers I mentioned too!

I think the problem isn't that there are not talented musicians ... there is not enough talented writters

I agree with you,

most newer music sucks. I exclusively listen to rock, metal and alternative. what you said about the synthesised beat/instruments is SO true. I believe that the new music sucks not because of lack of talent but because of lack of effort. I think that us the audience have to speak with our wallets and hold the artists accountable for bringing us quality music.

I think they're really really good.

There's also the Brit group The Heavy I particularly like:

Truth is, what you here on the pop station (top 40) just mostly sucks really. You have to look harder now a days. Because you like old rock and metal, you should get into alternative and indie rock as those genres have great music today. Let me give you a list of my favorite more modern artists in no particular order:

Jack White, The Strokes, Beck, The Killers, Foo Fighters, Arcade Fire, System of a Down, Rise Against, Radiohead, OK Go, Modest Mouse, Muse, Local Natives, Franz Ferdinand, and Bloc Party. That's all I can think of that I listen to on a regular basis that still make music today.

As a side note, based on what you said in your post, you may love this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ccr6Ksr_rc

Just talking about lyrics -
"Light 'em up up up, Light 'em up up up, Light 'em up up up, I'm on fire" - Fallout Boy

"Let it burn burn burn burn, We're gonna let it burn burn burn burn, we're gonna let it burn burn burn burn." - Ellie Golding.

"Don't wake me up, up, up, up, up, up.  Don't wake me up.  Don't wake me uuuuup." - Chris Brown

I could go on, but really?  We can only come up with one line to use in the refrain; half of that line is all the same word.  And then we just repeat that line over and over and over again?  FML.

Much better:

Agree with you that there's a lot of garbage passing for "good music" these days but Drake? Really? He's one of the few decent new artists out there and being at the begging of his career he'l (hopefully) only get better.

Anyway, there's still good music being made, you just won't usually find it in top 40's.

Sweet, I can't wait!

I like it.  :-)

I love Daft Punk!

I had to laugh out loud at that one, wow XD

That was the perfect comeback

I really, really don't like rap.  25 Bucks was alright I guess, but I honestly just can't stand that kind of music, especially the songs that use the terms "Nigga" or "Homie."  I don't mean to come across as rude to you, but I'm just being honest, it's not the genre or style for me.

To be honest, I don't think it was a large amount of talented artists/guitar players that started coming out - It was a slew of people who knew new ways to use a tool.  I don't really look at that as talent, more so knowing how to play guitar and read notes on a paper.  Is reading a book talent?  It's no different than reading music.  I'm not saying that there wasn't any talent of course, I'm just saying it's not only talent that made a lot of bands popular.
