my new motherboard has usb 3.0 ports, as well as 3x usb power ports. which ports are better for my mouse and keyboard? what about my external usb harddrive?
you won't notice a different between usb 3.0 and 2.0 with mouse and keyboard, but if your external drive is usb 3.0 enabled, make sure to use that.

Your mouse and keyboard wont need to draw anywhere near 900mA (that USB 3 supply), so as long as they are USB 2 devices it doesn't matter what one of the two they go in.
USB power ports tend to supply 1.5A, so are much better for things like chargers, HDD and gimmick USB toasters!
Just check the stickers on your peripherals and see if they need more or less than 900mA, if they do, use the Power ports.
