Which Super Micro boards are worth looking into

I’m trying to narrow myself down to a Super Micro board. However, a ton of them are only available from vendors selling completed systems. I’d like to get something within the last two generations either Intel or AMD.

Does anyone know which boards are worth looking into?

A lot of discs and fast on all hardware paths. Up to 30 hotswappable discs, not including nonhotswappable discs. At this point I just know I have 11 HDDs, and I’m going to have a mirrored Sata Dom. I’m sure if the TrueNAS performance tests indicates I’d get a performance improvement from the various cache drives I’ll add those. Price does not matter at this point. I just need to whittle my selection down to boards that are not only included in prebuilds.

Once I’m down to deciding between a $1,500 or $20,000 CPU I’ll probably go with the $1,500 CPU at that point. But, I’d still like to look at the $20,000 CPU for theorycrafting purposes, in case it makes my work load smooth enough for me to justify the purchase.

EPYC Genoa is the current bang for buck when you need PCIe slots, which with 30 hot swaps: you will if it’s in a home lab and you plan on keeping it in service for a minute as you’ll inevitably go SATA SSD or skip into U.2 storage.

Nothing past the last 2 generations would be worth the ROI of $2k vs $20k processors, unless it’s mission critical.

The EPYC Genoa is the standout in the past few generations with regards to connectivity, beyond that it’s the second gen 7002 series.

It’s just a back up and media server. I might move my Steam library on here, if that doesn’t cause issues with Steam. Maybe, do some stuff with virtualization. The only thing the CPU would really matter for is distcc, but I already have 72 cores across my network from high end retail cpus.

The max I’ll spend on this machine is $20k over multiple years, and that mostly comes from optimizing for space and redundancy. Just getting the HDDs is most of the cost, and I’m already past that point.

My next storage server probably needs higher end CPUS since I’m going to hook it up to one of the IPFS monetization schemes. But, that’s a few years out.
