Can I use a KVM switch with my dock station for easier laptop switching?
I’ve got a somewhat complex (in my opinion) setup and I’m looking for advice on simplifying my workflow. Here’s what I’m working with:
Current Setup:
- Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G9 49"
- Dock Station: Dell Dock WD19TB 180W USB-C (HDMI, Thunderbolt3)
- 2 work laptops and 1 personal laptop
- Peripherals connected to the dock:
- Wireless USB mouse
- Keychron keyboard (connected for charging, but switches between all 3 laptops with bluetooth)
- Monitor (via USB-C 8K 60Hz DP 1.4 4K 144Hz Thunderbolt 3 G-sync cable)
- Camera and microphone
Current Issue: To switch between laptops, I need to physically disconnect one laptop from the dock and connect another. It’s becoming a hassle, especially when I need to switch frequently between work and personal use.
Potential Solution: I’ve been looking into KVM switches (like the one reviewed here) and I’m wondering if I can set it up like this:
Laptops → KVM Switch → Dock Station → All peripherals (including monitor)
This way, I could potentially switch between laptops with just one button press on the KVM, without having to plug/unplug anything.
Questions:
- Has anyone successfully set up a similar configuration with a dock station and KVM switch?
- Are there any potential issues or limitations I should be aware of?
- Can a KVM switch handle the high bandwidth required for my 49" monitor (5Kx2k 240Hz) (I am not using 240hz daily but 120hz)?
- Any recommendations for a KVM switch that would work well with this setup?
I’d really appreciate any insights or experiences you can share. Thanks in advance!
