Where do I install the Ground Loop Isolator? (solved)

KVM Model:

2 DP1.4, 2 PC,

USB Interface (5-gigabit or 10-gigbit):

5 gbit

Problem:

Typical buzzing, crackling from speakers. Strangely gets louder when using the scroll wheel on mouse. Powered bookshelf speakers use standard 3.5mm. I know a Ground Loop Isolator will probably fix this, but my dumb question is, where do I install it/them? Just one between speakers and KVM? And/or should I add them between KVM and PCs?

You just gotta try an see. Do your speakers have a built in DAC/Amp? It seems like in your setup it can only go one of two places: between your PC→KVM or KVM→Speakers (or DAC or whatever). Try both and see which one works better.

I had a ground loop isolator right before my tube amp I had hooked to my PC (after my USB DAC), but recently I switched to an Onyko M-80 solid state and it doesn’t really need the isolator anymore; has much better grounding it seems.

Yea these are powered Edifier speakers.

Well, the Besign Ground Loop Isolator that is oft linked on here makes a moderate difference but still buzzing/crackling. Ugh. I could either try shielded audio cables, buying 2 more isolators to put on each of the 3 ports of the kvm, or switch to a USB DAC.

You might need two ground loop isolators one for each input pc given the speakers are powered

Yea that’s how mine is setup. I have an SMSL USB DAC (top center) that’s just plugged into one of the USB ports on the KVM. It switches pretty seamlessly. Very rarely it won’t pick up after a switch, but switch to another machine and back always fixes it.

So you’re saying put them between the PC and the KVM rather than between the KVM and the speakers?

I use the 3.5mm versions. The only place I could get them to work properly was to put them on the inputs to the KVM from the computers. Putting it on the output from the KVM didn’t seem to do anything.

I’m using these one Amazon.com: BESIGN Ground Loop Noise Isolator for Car Audio/Home Stereo System with 3.5mm Audio Cable : Electronics

Right directly after the source seems to be best
