Weird colour issue with 4k/HDR content

Sorry, but I didn’t really know where to put this or how to properly tag it but here it goes.

I’ve noticed a weird colour issue on various devices (*) where 4k or HDR content appears to have washed out colours. If I watch this content on my HDR display on Windows the colours are fine.

However, if I go ahead and disable VLC’s hardware acceleration on Android, the colours are as the should be. But the content stutters to a degree that makes it unwatchable.

Do you have any experience what’s causing this (probably colour palette/tone mapping) and how to fix it? It should be fixable, since the colours are fine HW acceleration is disabled.

*) Android tablet using VLC player and Raspberry Pi 4 running LibreElec 9.2

I don’t know if it’s the same issue but it can happen if the metadata doesn’t get picked up or some other reason it doesn’t get played in HDR mode, it will just assume it’s in bt709 colour space so it looks washed out.
