I just picked up a WD 8TB easyshare, as Best Buy USA was having a sale for $180, and the drive is a WD Red.
Wondering about shucking the drive...I've heard that whether or not you need to format after shucking depends on the HDD/external controller combo. The reason I ask is I may shuck later, after there's already data on the drive.
Does anyone have experience with shucking this particular drive?
2 year warranty with the enclosure but other than that I wish I could afford to by 24 and fill up a 24 disk nas like the sm cse-846. There are a couple of shucking videos out there.
The older models you definitely needed to do a complete reformat. Change the boot record and wipe the hidden partition. This can all be done is disk management. Have a 3TB WD in my machine, works fine.
nice. I'll probably use it as a backup and keep the warranty intact for now then...Once I upgrade my ITX rig to a NAS I'll shuck and format.
