Wayland scaling and Steam gaming (Solved)

Hi folks,

New member here, apologies if I’ve tagged the subject incorrectly.

I run Fedora KDE (43) on a full AMD system with a 4k monitor. So that I don’t have to sit with my nose on the screen I run 150% fractional scaling for general screen work. However, this is having an impact on Steam when gaming as it detects the monitor resolution as 1440p.

I’ve tried adding screen resolution to the command variables with no effect. The only way I can get 4k is to remove the fractional scaling.

Is there a way to force the Steam client to ignore the Wayland global fractional scaling and run games at native resolution?

I’ve tried searching for a solution but all the results are related to fractional scaling.

Thank you for your time.

Add a simple launch parameter to Steam to force native 4K and ignore display scaling.

Hi,

Thank you for your response, your suggestion is what I meant by command variables. My apologies for the mix up and lack of clarity.

Adding the screen size as a launch parameter seems to be ignored and full screen resolution is not available.

Unless my syntax is incorrect for the screen resolution.

Update:

Having tried all variations of the syntax for the Steam launch parameters I could find mentioned online, none of which worked, I resorted to tinkering.

Much tinkering later I found the issue. In KDE I had selected Legacy Applications (X11) to be scaled by the system. I had to do this to correctly scale an application I had installed through WINE.

Solution: Change Legacy applications to scale themselves. This means I’ll have to remember to change it back and forth as required.

Its similar to using gamescope, it sets \ resets actual display resolution\scaling automatically so game works natively and correctly
